#CoverReveal Morgan Le Fay: Giants in the Earth (Fata Morgana Book III) by Jo-Anne Blanco @lovebooksgroup #lovebookstours

Today I have an exciting cover reveal for the third book in the Fata Morgana series Morgan Le Fay: Giants in the Earth by Jo-Anne Blanco. The series is for readers of all ages (as Rosemary Sutcliff once said of her own work, “for readers aged nine to ninety.”) The books follow Morgan from her early childhood in post-Roman Dark Ages Britain and through her teenage years to adulthood. Elements of Celtic folklore, fairy tales, and mythologies of diverse cultures are woven throughout the books, but each novel is an original adventure story that can be read either as a standalone or as part of the ongoing series.

Here’s blurb for the book:

WHEN MONSTERS COME TO LIFE…

In the aftermath of Ambrosius’ attack on Tintagel Castle, young Morgan is sent away to the fortress of Dimilioc with her family, friends and tutor. But when bandits ambush their party, Morgan gets lost in the forest with nothing but her wits and her magic powers to rely on.

In her battle for survival, Morgan faces a cruel, hostile world that is suspicious, afraid and jealous of her magic. Silver-tongued faeries who are not what they seem. Vengeful Piskies and Muryans holding her friend Ganieda captive. Angry Giants and Spriggans who have awakened in the earth. And the ever-present threat of Ambrosius and his army, waiting to strike again…

To rescue her friends and outwit her enemies, Morgan must draw upon all her gifts, magic and mortal, in a perilous journey that will test her strength, faith and loyalty to the utmost…

Now here’s the wonderful cover:

Mythology, fairy tales and Arthurian legend are all major influences on her work, and her ongoing journeys to countries of great landscapes and folklore are never-ending sources of inspiration.

She is the author of Morgan Le Fay: Small Things and Great and Morgan Le Fay: Children of This World. These novels are the first two books in the Fata Morgana series.

In 1945, Isabela de Cordoba’s great-grandfather, the famous silent movie actor Lorenzo de Cordoba, mysteriously hid a legendary, multimillion-dollar emerald somewhere on the family’s sprawling Eucalyptus Street estate. Seventy years later, the gem remains concealed. Nicknamed the “Green Curse,” the emerald is blamed for the Southern California familia’s numerous, untimely deaths.

On her twenty-first birthday, Isabela receives a secret letter with a cryptic poem. These documents from the long-deceased Lorenzo invite her to hunt for the gemstone. But first, she must decipher the poem’s eight stanzas for clues.

To assist, Isabela hires her thirteen-year-old neighbors, the four Botanic Hill Detectives—twins Lanny and Lexi Wyatt, and their best friends, Moki Kalani and Rani Kumar. Eerie footsteps inside the mansion, unexplained occurrences in the adjacent cemetery, and the mysterious tenant in the backyard casita challenge them. But they ingeniously make progress on the poem’s meaning with startling discoveries. Sliding wall panels, a secret room, and hidden passages reveal much. The detectives aren’t the only ones looking for the emerald. The perilous race for the de Cordoba treasure is on!

Here is an exclusive excerpt:

Lanny is awakened at four a.m. by the sound of footsteps coming from the room overhead. He and Moki head to the third floor to explore:

Their eyes had adjusted to the darkness. Lanny pointed to the door of the suspected room and flashed Moki an A-OK sign. They turned off their flashlights, noticing the room’s door was slightly ajar, and listened for any sounds. Nothing but the mournful “who-who” sound of the resident barn owl in the old magnolia tree outside. They waited two more minutes, shivering and wishing they hadn’t forgotten their bathrobes and slippers. Still no sounds came from the room. Even the owl became silent. Moki felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

Finally, Lanny pushed the door open slightly and slipped into the room. Moki followed.

About the Author

Sherrill Joseph will be forever inspired by her beautiful students in the San Diego public schools where she taught for thirty-five years before retiring and becoming a published author.

She has peopled and themed the Botanic Hill Detectives Mysteries with children and adult characters of various abilities, races, cultures, and interests. Sherrill strongly believes that children need to find not only themselves in books but others from different races and social situations if all are to become tolerant, anti-racist world citizens. She also feels that kids are amazing human beings who don’t tend to get enough credit from some adults for their blossoming insights and intelligence.

The author created her detectives—patterned after her own fifth-grade students and twelve-year-old twin cousins—to be mature, smart, polite role models that will appeal to parents, teachers, but especially to kids who seek the courage and self-respect needed to realize their greatest potential.

Sherrill is the recent recipient of the Gold Award from Mom’s Choice Awards, and the Gold Award for Children’s Fiction in Mystery from Moonbeams Children’s Book Awards, both for Nutmeg Street: Egyptian Secrets, Book 1 in her Botanic Hill Detectives Mysteries series. She is a member of SCBWI and the Authors Guild and promises many more adventures with the squad to come.

Review:

Engella has been on the run from Hunters since she was eight years old, travelling through space and time. The only thing she wants is to find her parents, the only clue is a cryptic message left by her father.

After a particularly close call Engella ends up on the Isle of Skye in Scotland back in 1998. See meets a woman by the name of Annys who offers her a safe place for the night.

After another close call she and Annys find themselves on the run. Who is this woman and how does she know so much?

Now there was a little confusion on what category this book was, is it Middle Grade or Young Adult? For me it was definitely within the Middle Grade age range which I have to be honest I don’t usually read this type of book but I’m glad I took a chance on it!

What a rip roaring Sci-fi adventure this was! Not only do you travel through time but across the world from Scotland to the US even to Asia!

I really could see this being turned into a children’s animated adventure series or film.

Engella and Annys are a really good, strong female characters, something I always felt was missing in fiction I read as a child. Engella has been through so much but she’s still got a kind heart and tries her best to help people. I liked the little mystery surrounding Annys but boy when you find out who she really is…well you’ll just have to read it to find out yourself!

I also liked Eric, a teenager obsessed with the paranormal who sees lights in the sky, which he thinks are aliens but instead accidentally stumbles across Engella and the Hunters.

The Sci-fi aspect was well done, new technology was explained well without being over complicated or confusing even for someone like me who never really got the hang of science at school.

I did feel there were a few plot holes but with a character travelling through time, it’s probably quite hard to keep track of everything.

Overall The Lights of Time is a fast paced, fun, sci-fi adventure perfect for science fiction lovers of all ages.
