Publisher: Bookouture

Date Published: 1st June 2020

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Description:

FROM A NINE-TIMES USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR COMES A LIVELY AND FUN 1920s COZY MYSTERY WITH A BRAND-NEW DETECTIVE DUO.

Nora elbowed her way up to the railing and looked down. The paddle wheel was making its last turn, dredging up a mass of turquoise chiffon made almost transparent by the water. A hand, its red lacquered fingernails a contrast to the pale white skin, stuck up from a bejeweled cuff…

A relaxing cruise down the Mississippi on the Miss Delta Belle steamboat turns to tragedy when celebrity Delilah Dove falls from the deck and is swallowed by the river faster than you can say ‘man overboard!’

It’s touted as a tragic accident, but guests Miss Nora Marsh and her wily great-aunt Julia know a murder when they see one. Can they get justice for Delilah and crack the case without alerting the murderer to their suspicions?

As Nora and Julia hunt for clues it emerges that nearly everyone had a reason to want Delilah dead. And that’s bad news for the two sleuths—who want to solve the case pronto, before Mississippi police chief and Aunt Julia’s nemesis Artemis Leonard comes on board at the next port to launch the official investigation. She’s not letting him get the credit if she can help it.

With multiple suspects and a series of mysterious thefts onboard—not to mention the distractingly handsome Max Lawton turning Nora’s head—this is shaping up to be one tough case to crack. What started as a gentle river voyage is far from plain sailing.

A gripping and witty 1920s murder mystery from bestselling author Leighann Dobbs, perfect for fans of T E Kinsey and Lee Strauss.

Review:

I want to thank Sarah Hardy for inviting me on this blog tour and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a huge fan of Leighann Dobbs’ Oyster Cove Guesthouse series so I was very excited when I heard she had a new book coming out with Bookouture.

Murder on a Mississippi steamboat was a fun, fast paced historical mystery that I absolutely flew through.

It had all the hallmarks of your classic mystery. Puzzling clues, a whole host of suspects, all with something to hide who just happened to be trapped on a boat together.

Nora was a great character but her Aunt Julia stole the show for me, with her appetite for a mystery as well as leading a double life as a best selling author (published under a male pen name). She was a kind of Jessica Fletcher meets Miss Marple type of character.

The story is set in 1926 and there were some nice historical details that really added to the story, like the fashions of shorter skirts and  prohibition in America making it almost impossible for you to drink alcohol.

I did wish that there were a few more twists and turns, I had the murderer pegged from quite early on but it didn’t spoil my reading fun too much.

Murder on a Mississippi steamboat is a great start to this series and I can’t wait to read more adventures featuring Nora and Aunt Julia!

Review:

So I’m back at the Oyster Bay Guest House, with Nero, Marlowe and their human Josie, along with her mum Rose and friend Millie. This is the third in the series, it can be read as a stand alone but I’d highly recommend reading the book before, A Whisker In The Dark because there’s bit of crossover story wise.

There’s ghostly high jinks afoot as the guest house is full of mediums and psychics all trying to find Jedediah Biddeford’s missing treasure and uncover his killer. Madam Zenda claims to be in contact with Jed but ends up dead with a letter of warning to stay away from the guest house. Did a Jed’s ghost really come back and kill her? Nero, Marlowe and Josie are on the case.

A Purrfect Alibi is a fun, fur filled mystery that I couldn’t get enough of!

I can’t tell you how much this series always manages to cheer me up. It’s chock full of loveable characters, great mysteries and with a little hint of romance in there too. I genuinely never thought I’d be a fan of animals as sleuths but now I just can’t get enough.

Truthfully I had the murderer pegged quite early on, but Leighann Dobbs really kept me guessing, doubting that I was right.

I really hope there are going to be more books from the Oyster Bay Guest House, and I for one can’t wait for more!

Quick #Reviews Three Cozy Mysteries

So today I have so quick reviews of some cozy mysteries I picked up for free on Kindle. They are still free at time of this post:

Title: Then There Were Nun (Nun of your business Book 1) by Dakota Cassidy

Description:

then there were nunMy name is Sister Trixie Lavender, and I’m an occasionally possessed excommunicated nun.

Okay, that’s a lot to swallow at once. But it’s true I was booted from the convent after doing something unspeakable. Something I had no control over. Something that lives inside me to this day, exploding out like that chestburster in Alien when I least suspect it.

But I have help. My amazing friend Coop—the demon who saved me from an ugly end—remains by my side, loyal and true. She was Hell’s best tattoo artist back in the day, and together with my designs, we’re opening Inkerbelle’s Tattoos and Piercings, right in the heart of Portland’s most darling district, Cobbler Cove.

Of course, our bid to fit in would be a little less rocky if I could help Coop assimilate with humans, keep a lid on our sassy talking owl, Livingston…oh, and if someone hadn’t killed our landlord on day one—in our shop.

This mystery-loving, bumbling ex-nun and her trusty demon sidekick are on the case! If I don’t bumble my way right into my own demise first…

This new cozy mystery series from USA Today bestselling cozy mystery author Dakota Cassidy is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as Trixie and Coop hunt for a killer. Then There Were Nun is book 1 in the all new, Nun of Your Business series.

Review:

I saw this and thought, ‘ooh, I like the sound of that.’ An ex nun who happens to get possessed by an evil spirit now and again, her best friend is a demon and there’s also a cheeky possessed owl called Livingston.

Unfortunately it just fell a little short.

Don’t get me wrong the writing was good as was the overall mystery but there are a few issues I had that spoilt my enjoyment a little.

The thing I didn’t realise was these characters had already appeared in the author’s other series and the constant references to ‘Stevie’, which I assume is the main character in her other series, got a bit annoying.

It also sticks to the no violence rule of a cozy mystery, which all the violence happens sort of ‘off screen’. This kind of irritated me as there was a scene which the main character gets possessed, then we’re told about it afterwards by another character. Maybe this sort of subject matter is a bit too gritty for this sort of novel.

Also I know Livingston was meant to be Irish but he ended up sounding Scottish most of the time.

The main redeeming factor was Coop, she’s a great character, who’s trying to understand why humans do what they do, added some fun to the overall story.

I don’t think I’ll be carrying on with this series but I have picked up the first in the author’s other series Witch Slapped to see if I like that any better.

Title: Better Off Wed (Annabelle Archer Book 1) by Laura Durham

Description:

BetterOffWed1A guest with an axe to grind. A bridal party full of secrets. This wedding planner is about to turn detective…

Annabelle Archer is a few days away from completing the most elaborate wedding she’s ever planned. The planner is horrified to recognize the body lying underfoot as the mother of the bride. As she works to clear her best friend’s name, Annabelle discovers the bride’s mother had more enemies and secrets than she could ever fit on the guest list. To save her business and her friend, D.C.’s premiere wedding planner must find the killer. But will getting too close to the action make this wedding day her last?

Better Off Wed is the Agatha Award-winning first book in the Annabelle Archer Wedding Planner Mystery Series. If you like hilarious-yet-deadly whodunits, charming characters, and delightfully witty tales, you’ll love Laura Durham’s cozy mystery series.

Review:

This has been on my kindle since 2017 and I didn’t realise it, oops!

Annabelle is in the middle of one of the most high profile weddings she’s ever organised when she finds the mother of bride from hell dead at the bottom of a set of stairs. She of course starts to investigate putting herself in danger.

This was such a cute little cozy mystery! Fast paced and fun its perfect if you’re looking for something light hearted.

Two stand out characters for me were Richard, Annabelle’s camp caterer friend and Leatrice her nosey neighbour who loves a good mystery. They added a good dose of humour to the story, the back and forth between Annabelle and Richard really made me smile.

I did guess quite early on who the killer was but I read a lot of mysteries, it’s quite difficult to surprise me.

My only minor annoyance was Kate, Annabelle’s assistant who I felt was a little flat as a character, her main attributes being the fact she likes dating men and gets common sayings wrong.

I already have the second in this series which I’m looking forward to.

Title: Killer Cupcakes by Leighann Dobbs

Description:

Things are going great for Lexy Baker. She’s finally opened her dream bakery, gotten rid of herkiller cupcakes cheating boyfriend and settled into her grandmothers house with her perky dog Sprinkles at her side.

But her blissful life doesn’t last long. When her ex boyfriend is found poisoned with cupcakes from her bakery, Lexy finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation headed up by her hunky neighbour detective Jack Perillo.

With the help of a gang of iPad toting, would-be detective grandmothers, Lexy decides to take it upon herself to find the real murderer in order to clear her name and get her bakery back in business.

As things heat up on the murder trail, in the kitchen and between Lexy and the hunky detective, it’s a race against time to put the real murderer behind bars and get back to baking.

Will Lexy get her man?

Review:

So I really enjoyed The Oyster Bay series by Leighann Dobbs so when I saw this for free on Kindle I thought I’d check it out.

This series features Lexy Baker, who has just opened her dream bakery. She thrown into a murder investigation after her ex boyfriend is poisoned by some cupcakes from her bakery. There’s a little bit of romance on the cards for her too, with her handsome policeman neighbour who happens to be investigating the case.

So this was actually the shortest one of the three novels I read, it took me only an hour to read. It is also a dual perspective novel, with POV’s from both Jack and Lexy, which made it stand out from the other cozies I’ve read recently.

I will say that it was quick and enjoyable but I felt it was a little rushed in places. I would have liked to get to know the characters a little better and see the romance blossoming a bit more between Jack and Lexy.

A good start to the series, I’m not sure if I’ll pick up the next one but I haven’t decided yet.

What about you do you enjoy cozy mysteries? Have you read any of these? Do you have any recommendations for cozies I should check out?

A Whisker in the Dark - Blog Tour

Review:

I want to thank Noelle Holten for inviting me on this blog tour and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It is so nice to be back at the Oyster Bay Guest house with Josie, her mum Rose and her partner in crime solving Millie. Also I mustn’t forget the crime solving cats Nero and Marlowe!

The family of Jedediah Biddeford, the original owner of the Oyster Bay Guest house, are staying at the guest house for the town’s celebrations. To call them dysfunctional is an understatement, they all seem to hate each other.

The renovations to the guest house are going as planned until the bones of Jedediah Biddeford are found in one of the walls! Jedediah’s family believe the family legend that he brought home treasure and set about looking for it, along with the rest of Oyster Bay.

One of the family turns up dead and suspicion falls on Flora, the world’s worst maid, it’s up to Josie, Nero and Marlowe to find the real culprit.

This is the second in the series but can easily be read as a stand-alone without missing feeling like you’ve missed any of the story. I would still recommend reading the first A Twist In The Tail (you can read my review here) just because it’s such an enjoyable book.

I am absolutely loving this cosy mystery series! I’ve been having a bit of a reading slump lately, I can’t tell you how much this cheered me up.

A Whisker In The Dark is a humorous and quirky read which features cat detectives Nero and Marlowe with their little gang of feline helpers. I loved the way that the relationship is developing between them and their human Josie, as she’s starting to understand them a bit more when they’re pointing her in the direction of clues.

I saw a few complaints about the first book saying it wasn’t a believable story line and frankly I think they’ve missed the point of these novels, they’re fun and a great way of escaping reality for a few hours.

A Whisker In The Dark is a fast paced and fun cosy mystery with likeable sleuths with plenty of twists and turns that makes it such great read.

#BlogTour #Review A Twist In The Tail by Leighann Dobbs @bookouture @leighanndobbs

Title: A Twist In The Tail by Leighann Dobbs

Publisher: Bookouture

Date Published: 16th May 2019

Genre: Cosy Mystery

Description:

FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE USA TODAY BESTSELLING MYSTIC NOTCH SERIES…

Talk about inconvenient. Not only did I have a dilapidated mansion and no money to repair it with, two cats I had no idea how to care for and a room full of cranky guests waiting for their breakfast, I also had a dead body on my hands.’

Josie Waters has to admit she may have acted a bit hastily when she agreed to purchase the Oyster Cove Guesthouse – a charmingly gabled Victorian mansion on the breathtaking Maine coast – from elderly family friend Millie Sullivan. But Josie was desperate to flee Ohio and in particular her ex-husband, a chef who loved his job so much he left her for it. And anyway, how hard can running a guesthouse be?

The truth is, Oyster Cove Guesthouse is a mouldering money pit with falling-in roof and a cohort of regular guests who are as mischievous as a litter of kittens. And Millie keeps dropping by to dispense unasked-for advice. And Josie might have made a mistake in promising to adopt Oyster Cove’s two resident cats Nero and Marlowe, and treat them in the manner to which they’ve become accustomed. Josie has never had a cat before… let alone two feisty felines who think they own the place.

Ok, it’s not going well. At least it can’t get any worse, Josie thinks. Until her first guest ends up dead.

A joy to read, with a twist you’ll never guess! A page-turning new mystery series from a bestselling author, purrfect for murder mystery fans, cat lovers and everyone in between.

a twist in the tail banner

Review:

A Twist In The Tail is the first in the Oyster Cove Guesthouse cosy mystery series and what a perfect way to introduce this quirky bunch of characters!

Josie has moved back to Oyster Cove after the break up of her marriage, buying the Oyster Cove guesthouse and throwing herself into the renovation of the dilapidated mansion. If that wasn’t enough, she has to deal with fussy guest, a building inspector who fines her for every minor infraction and the resident cats Nemo and Marlowe who are determined to get under foot.

Then one the guests is found dead but is it an accident or murder?

When suspicion falls on Josie, with the help of her mum and her mum’s best friend Millie, they set out to clear her name. Unknown to them, the resident cats are on the scent too, determined to her their human out. Will they solve the case before anyone else gets hurt?

This was an absolute joy to read! It’s the perfect blend of mystery and fun with crime solving cats thrown into the mix. Yes, you read that right crime solving cats.

Now this is first book I’ve read that has animals as one of the main characters in the book since I was a child, I know it might put some people off but they are done so well, with humour that will have you laughing your socks off!

I loved all the characters, but my favourites were Josie’s mum Rose and Millie the former owner of the guesthouse and her mum’s best friend, who are out to prove that even though they’re retired it won’t stop them from investigating!

I also liked the fact that even though there are so many personalities in the story, the mystery wasn’t overshadowed and it really had me guessing who the culprit was until the very end!

The ending leaves it open with a hint of another puzzling mystery for the cats and their human Josie to solve and I for one cannot wait for the next one!

A twist in the tail is a must for animal lovers and cosy mystery fans!
