Guest Post:

This is one of my favourite parts of the book. Ina sends her best friend Sara a letter from beyond the grave. Like many women in Albania, Ina is suffering at the hands of an abusive husband with no way to defend herself, no money and no support network. It’s easy for those living in other countries to expect a woman in her position to have somewhere to go – but in Albania, most women don’t have a voice. This letter was hard to write because I’ve known many women in her position. I needed to readers to understand her plight.

It’s also the turning point in the book. It’s this letter that forces Sara to work with Alba and rescue her godson from a country they all fear.

Dear Sara,

If you are reading this letter, then I’m already gone. I knew my luck would run out eventually with that man. Please don’t judge Ardit too harshly. He wasn’t always this bad, but life, the people he hung around with and the suffering we have endured have made him like that. He started drinking more in Thessaloniki. Things went from bad to worse when we arrived back in Albania. We lost everything in Greece because of the crisis – our jobs, money, our home. When we got back to Albania, he started gambling, telling me he would make everything right again. He lost us the last of our savings I’d somehow managed to gather in Greece. Any guilt or remorse he felt he just drank away, blotted it out. It made him forget how bad things really were.

I rang him one night. Johan was very ill with fever and I was afraid. His friends mocked him: you better run home to your wife. Your boss. He became more violent that night, and ever since then, the violence never stopped. He hit me hard. I ended up with a black eye and a cracked rib. I felt sorry for Johan. He cried and screamed, ‘Daddy, please don’t.’ That boy has seen things no child should see. I didn’t know how to walk away without making things worse for the children.

You were right, Sara, I rushed into marrying him and didn’t listen to anyone’s advice. I cheated. Yes, I cheated on him. Only once, I swear. He never found out. You’re the only one I’m telling my secret to. Please keep this to yourself. Don’t misuse my trust. I don’t want my children to ever find out. I often ask myself why I did it? At the time I saw it as an escape, I convinced myself that this handsome Russian man would rescue me and the children and whisk us away from our horrible lives. But in reality he only wanted one thing – and if I’m honest with myself, it was just nice to feel free and wanted for a short while. Afterwards I treasured that liaison, it was my secret revenge on Ardit. My own silent rebellion.

There’s something else I haven’t told him about. Alba has been putting money into my two grown children’s accounts. She is helping me a lot and, I must say, I never expected that from her. Perhaps I judged her poorly and she’s a lot kinder than I gave her credit for. This is why I kept it from you, Alba said you would be suspicious and I didn’t want to worry you.

Sara, here is the important part, if you’re reading this and something has happened to me – please look after Johan. He is your Godson and it pains me that the two of you never got to meet. I know we never managed to hold a proper baptism for him, but I’m sure God will forgive us under the circumstances.

I’m counting down the days until Ardit kills me. Isn’t that a terrible thing to say? I did what I could, I even told the police. I don’t know why I bothered. They laughed at me every time I went to the station, with black eyes and torn lips. There’s that whore again; they would say to one another. I wonder what she did this time to piss her poor husband off. I gave up expecting any help from them eventually.

My dear friend, I hope you are not crying. This letter wasn’t written to make you sad, but to ask for your help – you’re the only person who never pushed me away. I’m including 200 euros in this envelope – I know it’s not much but perhaps you can buy Johan a prom suit for his graduation. He’s seven now, but who knows how old he will be when you read this. I like the idea of Johan wearing something from me on his special day that I don’t expect to ever see, even if it’s only a pair of socks.

Please tell him that he had a mother who loved him very much. Take care of him, now that I am gone. And I love you too, so much. Never forget that. You were like my mother, my sister, my everything.

Ina x

Q&A with Brittany Elise

Can you tell me a little bit about your book?

Awakening the Trinity is a YA supernatural fiction novel about a teenage witch who discovers she shares a lineage to the most revered and powerful trio in history known as the Trinity of Light.

In the 17th century, an all-powerful witch called Rionach the Dark ruled the Celtic nations with an army of enslaved werewolves at her side. In order to restore balance between Light and Dark, the Trinity of Light was summoned to vanquish the Dark Witch and end the Battle of the Dark Ages. Fast forward to present day, Darkness is stirring in Quinn’s home town of Silver Mountain when she discovers her ancestral link to the Trinity and realizes that she and her new companions have to stop the Dark Witch from returning to power.

Awakening the Trinity is packed with magic, action, adventure, and of course it’s a love story.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from?

I draw inspiration from so many things around me every day, but for this particular book, I was listening to a song by Aqualung called Strange and Beautiful when inspiration struck hard and fast. I think it had a lot to do with the lyrics, and the fact that I kind of create my own music videos in my head when I’m listening to songs. It’s kind of funny to think about, because the song itself has nothing to do with my storyline, but for whatever reason, it just lit a flame and it burned bright, I guess.

If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be?

Oh that’s tough. Um, “Powerful trio takes on an evil witch to protect the world they live in, and finds out if love really can conquer all.” I’m a writer, I don’t do well with short answers, haha.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

There’s something about the early hours of the AM that tend to get my creative juices flowing; so for me, waking up and making a cup of tea and perching myself at the end of the kitchen table is about as typical as it gets. If I have no distractions to deal with, I can pretty much write from sun-up to sun-down and not get tired. (My eyes might be burning as well as my fingertips) but that’s a good writing day for me. I work full-time right now though, so those days are a rare gem for me.

If you could recommend just one book to read what would it be and why?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It’s a life-changing classic.

Who are your favourite authors?

(In no particular order) Sarah Dessen, Kelley Armstrong, JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin, Charlaine Harris, Suzanne Collins, Lois Lowry, John Green, Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelley, Robert Frost (I’ll stop there because I’m pretty sure the list would just keep going and going.)

Is writing your only job? If not, what is your other job?

I manage an FBO at a small airport where I service aircraft – (fuelling airplanes, customer service.) I am also a certified obedience instructor and have two wonderful German shepherds.

Tell me something interesting about yourself (that’s not in your author bio!)

I’m actually a bit of an introvert. My idea of going out and having a good time usually entails things like going hiking and exploring the great outdoors. I love to travel; new experiences are just fuel for a yet-to-be-written story.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the prequel and sequel (simultaneously) for Awakening the Trinity, and I’m also working on some New Adult romance projects. Very fun and exciting!

About The Author:

My love for writing began at a very young age–way before I could even type on a keyboard. I author photo (5)was always writing short stories and poems with a fan club of one (my mom.) I never stopped writing, but I don’t think I believed in myself enough to actually pursue it as a career. When I enrolled in college, I took as many creative writing classes as they offered, and ended up graduating with a degree in photography and minoring in English. I enjoy art in all its forms, but writing has always been my first love. Even when I was pursuing other careers, writing was always my go-to comfort. I later became an animal obedience instructor and met a children’s author through my dog training. She helped me get my foot through the door, so to speak, and I haven’t turned back since. During the day, I manage an FBO at my local hometown airport, and by night, I dive into my writing with my husband and my four-legged children by my side.

Excerpt:

Blue pulled at the lead. I let him off once I’d scanned the area and noted no loose dogs. Only a lone figure loitering. His eye line crossed mine as he also examined the park, and paused on me long enough to raise a creepy sensation.

I moved to a bench by the play park and pretended to tie my laces. When I straightened up, the man was striding straight towards me. I searched for Blue, hoping for a semblance of protection, but he was nowhere to be seen. Nor was anyone else.

Before I could stop him, the man sat down next to me. He whistled and shouted, ‘Here boy!’ then faced me with a disturbing grin. As if he knew the dog wouldn’t come. I jumped to my feet and looked around. What had he done?

On the second blow of silent air through my dry mouth, Blue appeared from behind a tree thirty yard away. Safe. He showed no interest in me or the man, instead sniffing out the ground’s many treasures.

I turned back to the intruder. Standing over him gave me an edge—at least I thought it did—and I raised my chin and my voice when I asked, ‘Do I know you?’

He chuckled. ‘Nah, hen. I’m only the messenger.’

What?’

His smile faded. ‘We’re not very happy about you closing the café for so long. You need to open up again. There’s a delivery coming on Thursday.’

What do you mean? How do you—’

His eyes turned to ice as he grabbed my wrist in a flash. ‘We’ll be very disappointed if you’re not there to receive the goods. Ken what I’m saying?’

He rushed off, his dark coat billowing behind him like a cape, almost engulfing Blue who circled his legs, tail wagging, until he turned towards the road.

The Raven Tower Full Tour Banner

Q&A with Emma Miles:

Can you tell me a little bit about The Raven Tower?

The Raven Tower is based in a world with four lands, each with very different societies and theologies. Chem; the mountainous and snowy land of sorcerers where women are considered property. The Borrows; a series of small rugged islands whose people survive by raiding. Elden; a kingdom of relative wealth and peace. And the Fulmer Islands where the people are ruled by a woman and live closely with nature. When the small and independent islands of the Fulmers come under attack, they are forced to go to their much larger neighbour, Elden, for help. The king of Elden has a sorcerer, a man who was rumoured to have been washed up by the sea as a baby; he has a reputation of being a powerful and frightening man.

The book mainly follows three characters. Kesta, who is a fire-walker, gifted with a rare magic that allows her to see other places through the flames. She’s fiercely independent and has quite a temper.

Dia, who is Kesta’s mother and the ruler of the Fulmers.

And Osun, a merchant in Chem who is really the spy of an unknown and dangerous master.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from?

My ideas come from anywhere and everywhere! I’ve always had very vivid dreams and spent too much time daydreaming. Without giving away any spoilers, I’d started writing a book with a similar basic theme some years ago, but it didn’t quite take off. I started toying with the idea again but with a darker undertone and when I made a start on it, it just really took off.

If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be?

Ha ha, are you trying to torture me? A lot of writers hate writing blurbs and synopsis with a passion and I’m one of them; one sentence is even worse!

Seriously though, I’ll give it a go.

Strangers from conflicting societies are forced to work together to save their lands from a vile and evil magic and an Overlord who would enslave them.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

Because of the job I do and the fact it’s shift work and long hours I find it hard to have a typical day. Sometimes it’s just squeezing in a quick email to myself, other days it’s taking a walk and sitting out under the sky seeing scenes unfold like movies in my head. On those occasions where I do get a few hours to write I’ll usually start my music playlist for that book to lose myself in and, if I’m lucky, immerse myself in the ‘writing zone.’

If you could recommend just one book everyone should read what would it be and why?

It’s always hard to pick one! I think I’d have to say ‘Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway’ by Susan Jeffers. It’s a self-help book that really turned my life around. I wish I’d read it years before I did.

Who are your favourite authors?

JRR Tolkien, Stephen King, Robin Hobb, Terry Pratchett and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Is writing your only job? If not, what is your other job?

I’m a railway guard. I’ve been on the railway now for 18 years. I’ve had to deal with a huge variety of incidents and events including a train fire.

Tell me something interesting about yourself (that’s not in your author bio!)

Despite being incredibly shy, I did do a bit of acting and singing on stage when I was younger and had some voice training. When it came to doing my degree, though, my shyness won out and I went for backstage theatre work rather than front of stage.

What are you currently working on?

The sequel to The Raven Tower. It was originally meant to be a standalone but I fell in love with the characters and couldn’t leave them where they were at the end of the book!

Author Bio-

I presently live in the stunning county of Dorset where I’m a cat slave to Wolfe and Piglitt I The Raven Tower 0332lr (1 of 1)spend as much time as I can outside in nature and love exploring and learning about new cultures and languages. I’ve visited Greece, Serbia, Transylvania, Sicily and Norway as well as making several road trips around our beautiful United Kingdom. I paint, sculpt, dabble in photography and do a little archery but most of all – whenever I get a chance – I write.
My writing started from a very young age when I often found myself being the one taking charge of and entertaining all my younger cousins. They loved to hear my stories and although they mostly called for ghost stories it was fantasy I fell in love with when I read The Lord of the Rings when I was ten. I went on to write stories and short ‘books’ for my friends through school and college; then one evening whilst I was waiting for my aunt and uncle to visit an image came to my mind of a boy sitting beneath a bridge. I didn’t know who he was or why he was there, but from exploring those questions ‘The Wind’s Children’ trilogy blossomed and grew with roots going back into his far history as well as stretching out to his future. The boy’s name was Tobias.

I have since left Tobias’s world of ‘Naris’ to explore the Valley with Feather in the ‘Hall of Pillars’ which is now available through Amazon. I am now presently finding my way through Elden, the beautiful Fulmer islands, the ravaged Borrows and haunted Chem with Kesta Silene; a shamaness of sorts with a big journey ahead of her. I hope you come along to share her story and join her adventure; she needs you and you won’t regret it.
