Description:

In the Godforsaken badlands of Transylvania the fragile truce between mankind and monsters is about to explode…

When bounty hunters target one of 19th century Europe’s most feared vampire clans, the last place any lawman wants to be is caught in the middle…

But for Anton Yoska, Lord Marshal of the Imperial lands south of the Carpathian Mountains, fate has trapped him in a supernatural stand-off that can end only in a bloodbath.

A gang of mercenaries led by Anton’s former army comrade Milosh Drubrick have captured vampire aristocrat Stefan Modjeski, wanted for a string of frenzied murders, and have come to Anton to claim the reward. And as Stefan’s predatory undead kin lay siege to the jailhouse, Anton is faced with an agonising choicehand over his prisoner and abandon the bounty hunters to their unspeakable fate, or stand and fight.

The jailhouse defenders are outnumbered and out of options. It’s a battle that can’t be won, certain slaughter for them all, and Anton can’t trust his scheming allies. But Lord Marshal Yoska isn’t about to surrender.

For he’s an experienced vampire hunter, a dangerous man when cornered, and a single minded warrior who knows there are worse things to fear than death…

Review:

Anton Yoska survived the savage vampire wars and now is Lord Marshal of a small town called Brejnei. He leads a quiet life until his old army comrade Milosh Drubrick, with his ragtag band of bounty hunters, drag a vampire into the sleepy village. The vampire is none other than aristocrat, Stephan Modjeski and his family especially his ‘mother’ Kristina will stop at nothing to get him back. Who will survive?

This is beautifully written, Gothic and a little disturbing at times. Personally I wouldn’t class it as horror, just mainly because I think horror should have me terrified and shivering under a cover, but I did think it was more of a good fast paced action story.

I loved the character of Anton, he’s devoted to his wife even though she is dying from fever, and determined to uphold the law even if it costs him his life. Apart from Pavel, his young deputy, Anton seemed to be surrounded by horrible people. Twisted Count Kravnik, who had been sent to over see the execution of two poachers, Nickru his other deputy who wanted his job and finally the bounty hunters who frankly seemed worse than the vampires!

I wouldn’t say this book is overly gory but I will warn you there are some really brutal themes in the book, rape is one of them, though thankfully it’s not actually shown within the pages, just referred to.

If I had one issue it would be the language was a little too modern (the use of the word ‘hot’ when describing a woman springs to mind), I kept having to remind myself it was meant to be set in the 19th century.

Overall a good start to the series and I’m interested to see what the author does next!

Review:

Herman runs away from home to work on a horse ranch but before getting to her destination she meets the handsome and mysterious Stephen, a magician looking for a new assistant. Herman agrees and finds herself falling head over heels in love with him. But his family hold a dark secret, what will Herman do when she finds out?

Now most people who read my blog regularly know that romance is not my genre, too many mushy feelings, but I have to say the paranormal romance genre is really starting to grow on me.

The Magician’s Curse combines things I really enjoy a bit of mystery, magic and a bit of steaminess.

Herman, a girl yes apparently it’s a tradition in her family that girls are given boys names, is naive, a little too trusting but very sweet. The only part of her character I didn’t like was the fact she left her eleven year old brother and I’m assuming mentally ill mother (her sickness was never fully explained) while she went off but not everyone is perfect and I still ended up liking her.

There was also an interesting cast of secondary characters, my favourite being Aunt Aggie, the foul mouthed ghost of Herman’s great aunt who kept popping up to tirade Stephen.

The only aspect I didn’t like was the whole love at first sight thing. I’m an old cynic with that sort of thing anyway but I think it would have been better if the romance would have been built up a little bit more, like ‘will they admit they have feeling for each other or not’ sort of thing but that’s just me.

Overall a magical and mysterious romance that is both sweet and a little steamy.

Happy Release Day! Taste The Dark by Nicola Rose @_NicolaRose_ #BookReview #Vampires #SteamyFiction

Title: Taste The Dark by Nicola Rose.

Date Published: 30th April 2018

Genre: Vampire, supernatural, steamy.

Description:

One reckless girl and two vampire brothers – battling forces of love over lust, and light over dark…

Jess

I killed my parents. I didn’t mean to, I don’t think. I can’t really remember.

I can’t remember much from the years that followed either, other than an endless stream of bad decisions, generally involving alcohol, drugs and bad boys. My new job in a new town signified a turning point – time to sort myself out.

What I hadn’t anticipated was the 6ft package of brooding, inked-up perfection who started stalking me. And don’t even mention the equally hot brother crawling under my skin…

They radiate danger, it flows around them like a seductive spell; and danger is my favourite word.

Zac

I was doing a pretty good job at balancing on the fine line between light and dark, blurring the edges and living in the grey. But then dead vampires started piling up around me and the Bael gave me a ticking countdown to fix it.

Now she’s arrived. Four seconds – the moment I saw her – that’s how long it took to know that she’d simultaneously bring heaven and hell to my door. I don’t even know what she is, but I know I crave her.

Falling for a human girl has left me teetering on the verge of collapse. This could be just the ammo my brother needs to nudge me over the edge and into oblivion.

Taste the Dark is a full-length paranormal romance/urban fantasy, intended for adult audiences. Expect a lot of heat and a little darkness, because romance isn’t always sweet.

Book one in the Elwood Legacy series.
Review:

Jess is a messed up party girl, who travels to South Padre Island to escape her problems and be closer to her best friend Anna but runs into trouble when she comes across vampire Zac Elwood and his twin brother Alex. These tattooed bad boys are everything she is trying to avoid but she’s drawn to danger and can’t help herself.

I love vampires. I have since I discovered Buffy The Vampire Slayer at the age of twelve, but I don’t often read vampire fiction so when I spotted this book on Instagram I thought I’d give this book a read.

If you’re looking for a sweet supernatural romance, this not the book for you. It’s dark, twisted, violent and very steamy, I was actually a little shocked when I first started reading it!

There was not a dull moment in this book. It had thrill, spills and a hint of mystery and magic with a fresh take on steamy romance. Also the vampire in this story are real monsters, which I appreciate, not the slightly watered down version we’ve been getting over the past ten years or so.

Okay it’s going to get a lot of comparisons to other novels/TV series. There’s the love triangle from the Vampire Diaries and it’s got the dark, twisted overtones of True Blood (there’s even a little Twilight vampire trying to ignore the monster inside in there but I’m not going to dwell on that too much).

Nicola has created some really troubled characters who you really root for, like Zac who’s trying to fight the beast inside him or Jess the wild, suicidal, bad girl who wants to change her ways. Then there was some you’d like to give a good slap to, especially Alex, Zac’s twin brother.

I have to also point out here that this is a self published novel and I have to say it is so well written and edited, it could rival a book published by a traditional publisher.

I have to be honest I’m not a fan of bad boys and this book hasn’t really changed my opinion but it came awfully close to converting me to a bad boy lover.

Overall a must for fan of steamy romances and bad boys.

#BlogTour #Review with #Giveaway Mask Beneath Her Face by Rafael Chandler @shanannigans81

Title: Mask Beneath Her Face by Rafael Chandler

Publication Date: October 14, 2017

Genre: Horror/ Thriller

Blurb:

During the 1980s, slashers terrorized America. With machetes and masks, these unstoppable killers stalked college campuses, quiet suburbs, and lakeside cabins.

Thirty years ago, Bobbi Metzger survived a massacre at her 16th birthday party. She spent decades putting her life back together.

Tonight, Bobbi will face a new killer: a high-tech slasher hell-bent on opening the doorway to an abyss of unimaginable horror.

How long can Bobbi survive this nightmare? What will she do to protect the people she loves? How much blood is she willing to spill?

If you love 80’s slasher flicks like Friday the 13th or Sleepaway Camp, this book’s for you!

Warning: This book contains extreme gore and violence. Not for the faint of heart!

Mask-cover-highrez.jpg

Review:

Bobbi, Jesse and Sam all have something in common, they all survived. Back in the 80’s slashers terrorised America, no matter how many times you killed them they kept coming back again and again. Now thirty years later the slashers are coming back, even more terrifying than ever.

As the blurb says this book is not for the faint of heart! There is plenty of violence and gore but I liked the fact that it wasn’t too graphic, which is problem I’ve encountered with the horror genre before. I mean I don’t want to read a book and feel like throwing up afterwards!

It has a subtle nod to films like Halloween, Friday 13th, Chucky etc and I would recommend it if you are a fan of any of those movies. There was also an element of the supernatural in the story as it sort of explains why the killers keep coming back even though they’ve been killed a million times.

I loved the characters. Jesse is hiding from his slasher refusing to go near any reflective surface. Bobbi has turned to pills and alcohol, waiting for another fight with her slasher. And Sam who seems to have moved on the best, with a secure job, is hiding a terrible secret about his. Then there’s Cris, a misfit kid who’s been used and abused for pretty much her whole life and adopted into Bobbi, Jesse and Sam’s little family but hides a nasty secret that is going to be a shock to everyone.

I would love to read more about each character and their slasher. I would love it if they each had their own prequel story about how they survived each of their slashers in the 80’s (they are touched upon in the book but I just wanted more!).

My only issue was the fact that was a few too many different points of view. There were the main characters but there were also some of the victims and I felt like it got a bit too much at one point.

Overall a fast paced, gore laden, slasher epic that builds to an absolutely terrifying ending.
