Title: Beyond The Yew Tree by Rachel Walkley

Date Published: 27th March 2020

Genre:Ghost Story/Women’s fiction

Description:

Whispers in the courtroom.

Only one juror hears them.

Can Laura unravel the truth by the end of the trial?

In an old courtroom, a hissing voice distracts shy juror, Laura, and at night recurring nightmares transport her to a Victorian gaol and the company of a wretched woman.

Although burdened by her own secret guilt, and struggling to form meaningful relationships, Laura isn’t one to give up easily when faced with an extraordinary situation.

The child-like whispers lead Laura to an old prison graveyard, where she teams up with enthusiastic museum curator, Sean. He believes a missing manuscript is the key to understanding her haunting dreams. But nobody knows if it actually exists.

Laura is confronted with the fate of two people – the man in the dock accused of defrauding a charity for the blind, and the restless spirit of a woman hanged over a century ago for murder. If Sean is the companion she needs in her life, will he believe her when she realises that the two mysteries are converging around a long-forgotten child who only Laura can hear?

Ordinary women.

Extraordinary experiences.

Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources tour for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Beyond the Yew Tree is an intriguing mix of ghost story, historical fiction, mystery and romance, with even a little legal thriller action thrown in there too!

I liked the main character Laura. She’s a little blunt but honest and level headed, not the kind of person you’d think would even entertain the notion of being haunted! But she hides a secret pain in her past, a mistake that’s  troubled her for years. Sean was also a very sweet character who compliments Laura’s bluntness well.

The ghost of the story also has a compelling and tragic tale to tell, expertly woven throughout the novel.

I did find the trial aspect a little tedious at times (it was to do with fraud, not a subject I find that interesting) but that didn’t spoil my overall enjoyment of the novel.

Beyond the Yew Tree blends several genres together to make a sweet and satisfying read.

#BlogTour 30 Days In June by Chris Westlake @ChrisWestlake2 @DamppebblesBTs #damppebblesblogtours

Title: 30 days in June by Chris Westlake

Date Published: 26th December 2019

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Description:

On the 1st day of June 1988, the residents of south Wales were thrown into a state of panic when a married couple were brutally murdered in their own home. The killer, nicknamed Spartacus by the media, did not flee the scene immediately; instead, he stayed to carve Roman Numerals onto his victims’ chests.

This was the beginning of a month-long killing spree, each murder taking a step closer to home.

Seventeen-year-old Jeffrey Allen was to be the final victim, on the final day of the month. Instead, he became the only survivor, and the only real witness. The killings ended as suddenly as they began. Jeffrey relocated to London, changing his name, and his identity, to Marcus Clancy. His past life became merely a dark secret.

On 1st June 2018, 30 years to the day since the first killing, a mysterious figure refers to Marcus by his old name, through closing lift doors.

Is Spartacus back? If so, has he returned to finish what he failed to do thirty years ago?

And so begins 30 days of terror for Marcus Clancy, culminating in dramatic fashion on the final day of June.

Review:

I want to thank Emma Welton for inviting me on this blog tour and providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

30 Days in June is a tense psychological thriller with a beginning that really draws you in.

The story has two narratives, 1988 when Spartacus was at the height of his reign of terror and thirty years later when Jeffery Allen, now Marcus Clancy, the serial killer’s only surviving victim, is trying his best to get on with his life. Unfortunately for him someone doesn’t want that, has Spartacus come back to finish him off?

To me, Marcus wasn’t all that likeable but he was definitely interesting and at times quite an unreliable narrator that you’re not entirely sure you can trust. I did feel sorry for him especially as he started to lose his grip on his sanity.

I have to be honest it lost a little bit of steam at certain times through the book, specifically when Marcus was talking to his therapist, I just wanted to get back into the thick of the story.

I’d recommend 30 Days in June if you like a realistic character driven crime story.

#BookReview The Three Women by Valerie Keogh @ValerieKeogh1 @Bloodhoundbook

Title: The Three Women by Valerie Keogh

Date Published: 17th February 2020

Publisher: Bloodhound Books

Genre:  Psychological Thriller

Description:

How well do you know your friends?

When Beth, Megan and Joanne meet at university, they become inseparable friends who’d do anything for one another — even agreeing to keep what happens one shocking night a secret.

When Megan decides to tell her fiancée the truth about that night, it threatens to ruin the lives of everyone around her.

And someone is prepared to do anything to stop that happening…

Valerie Keogh is also the author of The Dublin Murder Mysteries. The Three Women is an utterly compelling psychological thriller which fans of authors like Louise Jensen, B A Paris and K.L. Slater are sure to love.

Review:

I want to thank Valerie Keogh for providing me with a copy of The Three Women in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve read quite a few of Valerie’s Keogh’s novels but I think this has to be my favourite of all of them!

The Three Women is an utterly absorbing psychological drama that pulls you in and doesn’t let you go.

The story was, for me, all about how one incident can affect those involved in different ways and of course friendship.

We follow Beth, Joanne and Megan from their chance meeting at university to an incident that changes their worlds to who they have become now. Each one of the characters was unique, flawed and realistic. I got surprisingly emotionally involved with all of them.

I did find the ending a little predictable but there were few good shocks and surprises to keep me on my toes.

The Three Women is enthralling, emotional and engaging, I’d highly recommend it!

About The Author:

Valerie Keogh grew up reading Agatha Christie so when she started writing it seemedBetter photo natural to write crime novels.

In March 2018, Valerie signed a two book contract with the publisher, Bookouture. The first of these, Secrets Between Us, was published in Nov 2018 and the second, The Housewife, in Feb 2019.

Murder at Enderly Hall - Blog Tour Poster

Review:

I want to thank Noelle Holten from Bookouture for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This second ripping roaring adventure with Kitty Underhay but don’t worry if you haven’t read the first, this can easily be read as a standalone.

Kitty is invited to Enderley hall by her Aunt Hortense and cousin Lucy, it’s not long before she’s drawn into a case involving the theft of some important documents from her uncle’s study. If that wasn’t enough Nanny Thoms is found dead.

Suspicions grow and Kitty invites her friend Matthew Bryant to help. Will they stop the murderer before they strike again?

Murder At Enderley Hall is a well written and utterly thrilling historical mystery!

I liked the character of Kitty even more in this book. She’s still her stubborn self, no matter how much Matthew tries to get her to stay out of danger she won’t, with her thirst for adventure and determination to find the truth.

There’s plenty of red herrings glore, intrigue and a little bit of will they, won’t they between Matthew and Kitty. Honestly, there’s never a dull moment in Murder at Enderley Hall!

In these uncertain times, Murder at Enderley hall is a great escape from reality for a few hours.

I cannot recommend this series highly enough. I can’t wait to read more adventures featuring Kitty and Matthew!

2-Holmes prevents an injustice and triumphs over a greedy family.

3-A train arrives 3 years late. Only Holmes can solve this one.

4-Holmes battles blundering politicians and a master criminal.

5-An elaborate crime with a strange motive.

Review:

I want to thank the Write Reads for inviting me on this blog and providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I always find it interesting when an author takes on literary legend and one of my favourite fictional detectives, Sherlock Holmes.

This book contains five stories; The Holborn Toy Shop, The Legacy of Doctor Carus, The Train From Plymouth, The Whitehall Papers and The Grosvenor Square Furniture Van.

Each story stays true to the original Sherlock Holmes stories in setting and pace but Maurice Barkley still manages to stamp his own unique take on both Sherlock and Dr Watson.

There are of course cameos from Inspector Lestrade, Mrs Hudson, Wiggins and the irregulars and even Sherlock’s brother Mycroft.

The Legacy of Doctor Carus and The Train from Plymouth were my favourites as they felt the most like the original stories while also being fascinating mysteries too!

I did feel a couple of the stories weren’t quite as strong, mystery wise, as the other but of course that’s just my opinion.

5 adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a quick and engaging read that is a nice nod to the original stories.

#BookReview Mystery At Apple Tree Cottage by Clare Chase @ClareChase_ @bookouture #BooksOnTour

Title: Mystery At Apple Tree Cottage by Clare Chase

Publisher: Bookouture

Date Published: 12th March 2020

Genre: Cosy Mystery

Description:

Obituary writer and amateur sleuth Eve Mallow is enjoying life in sleepy Saxford St Peter – until a mysterious murder lands right at her door…

It’s spring in Saxford St Peter – time to get back in the garden, listen to the birds, and take gentle strolls in the woods. But for some, it’s the season for murder.

Eve Mallow is relishing the gentle pace of the village until a new arrival stirs everyone up. Ashton Foley is back: a teenage tearaway turned interior designer to the stars. He’s mad, bad and dangerous to know, but charming too – as Eve herself can testify – and every house in Saxford opens its doors to him.

So when he’s found murdered in the woods near his mother’s home, Apple Tree Cottage, there’s no shortage of suspects. A jealous husband? A spurned lover? Or has someone from his past life caught up with him?

The police soon hit on a simple solution, and arrest his mother’s partner Howard. Ashton always hated him, and he bears all the marks of a recent fight. But Ashton’s mother, miles away in New Zealand, is convinced he’s innocent, and enlists Eve’s help to prove it.

There’s just one problem. Eve saw Howard sniffing around Apple Tree Cottage on the morning of the murder, and she’s fairly sure he’s guilty, too…

An unputdownable page-turner, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Agatha Christie and Betty Rowlands.

Mystery at Apple Tree Cottage - Blog Tour

Review:

I want to thank Noelle Holten for inviting me on this tour and Bookouture for providing me with a copy Mystery At Apple Tree Cottage in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second in the Eve Mallow series but can be easily read as a standalone.

I’m back with obituary writer/amateur sleuth Eve Mallow and this time she has the tricky job of finding the killer of bad boy done good Ashton Foley, who seems to have no shortage of enemies!

Mystery At Apple Tree Cottage is a solid cosy mystery with an idyllic setting and nosy main character, that is a nod to classic mysteries.

What I love about this series is Clare Chase manages to set a vivid scene while still creating a puzzling mystery.

Eve is still her determined self, even though she is warned off, yet again, from investigating, she can’t help herself using her obituary writing as a cover to interview the suspects. I have enjoyed seeing Eve grow with confidence since the last book and can’t wait to see what is in store for her next.

I think this one improved on the last, not getting quite so bogged down in the details and a good steady pace.

Mystery At Apple Tree Cottage is a great cosy mystery with plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing.

BLOG TOUR (2) (1)

Review:

I want to thank Sarah Hardy at Books On The Bright Side Publicity for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the sixth book in the DI Bliss series and while it can be read as a standalone I would recommend reading a few of the other books in the series first just as the story does refer to earlier events.

Endless Silent Scream does feel like Bliss’ greatest hits, with a return to his first case when he was assigned to Peterborough, along with guest appearances from a former flame and Bliss’ old bosses and colleagues.

Bliss was on fine form through the book with his trademark grumpy attitude and rule bending ways but we got to see a softer side of him watching the relationship grow between him and Molly who he saves from jumping off a hotel roof.

I did feel there were a couple of minor things that weren’t fully explained (or if they were I may have missed them) but the ending was very satisfying.

Endless Silent Scream is a complex and compelling police procedural, packed full of action, mystery and emotional moments.

About The Author:

Tony J Forder is the author of the bestselling crime thriller series featuring detectives cropped-1Jimmy Bliss and Penny Chandler. The first four books, Bad to the Bone, The Scent of Guilt, If Fear Wins, and The Reach of Shadows, were joined by The Death of Justice, on 9 September 2019. Book number six, Endless Silent Scream, will be published on 9 March 2020.

Tony’s dark, psychological crime thriller, Degrees of Darkness, featuring ex-detective Frank Rogers, was also published by Bloodhound Books. This is a stand-alone serial-killer novel. Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

So this is a prequel novella to the author’s Lost Solace series and having not read any of the other books, it was a perfect place for me to start

Helene is a futuristic sci-fi short story, the perfect mix of intrigue, entertainment plus a dash of humour.

Helene is a great character. Smart, brave but there’s also a little bit of mystery to her. I absolutely loved the way the author played her off ViraUHX, it was so much fun to read!

In large part the story is mostly dialogue, with ViraUHX voice written in all capitals which I didn’t mind. Although it got a little hard to read in places especially when the AI decided to go on a rant.

The ending of the book isn’t a cliffhanger so to speak but it does leave it open for the next book, giving you a little peek almost of what’s to come. I was so intrigued by the ending, I’ve put the other two novels in this series on my wishlist.

My only issue was I wished the story was longer!

Helene is a well written and compelling sci-fi story that will leave you wanting more!

Review:

I want to thank Rachel Amphlett for providing me with a copy of None The Wiser in exchange for an honest review.

I read The Friend Who Lied by Rachel Amphlett last year, so when I saw she had a new detective series coming out, I thought I want to give that a read.

Mark Turpin just getting used to his new surroundings when he is thrust into the brutal murder case of a local priest.

Mark and his team are left stumped, with no witnesses and no forensic evidence. A second priest is murdered in his own home, it becomes a race against time to stop the killer before they strike again.

None the wiser is a fantastic start to this series, it’s gritty and utterly gripping!

I liked Mark Turpin and warmed to him immediately. He’s a little damaged from a previous case where he almost lost his life but he still tries to work through it. I also liked DC Jan West, she is a bit of a mother figure in Turpin’s team and I really look forward to seeing her character grow as the series goes on.

The story is quite dark, at times a little gruesome but it’s not overly so and works well in the overall story.

None the wiser is a fast paced and addictive read, that I absolutely flew through, now I can’t wait for the next book!
