Review:

I love a ghost story so when I read the blurb for Echoes of Home it piqued my interest.

His long-lost brother gifts Leslie a cottage and he grabs the opportunity for a fresh start, but the cottage has a terrible past that he’s about to discover.

Goodness, I didn’t realise this was going to be quite such an emotional ride, with some really moving and tragic moments. Of course, there were some good spine chilling and spooky instances too.

Leslie is the kind of character you may not exactly like but you feel sorry for. He’s the youngest of five and seemed like a person who’d got a bad lot in life through no fault of his own. 

The story was reinforced with some nice historical research including the potato famine, which started in Ireland and spread over which I honestly had no idea about.

I found this a bit of a slow burn, particularly the first half and some of the dialogue felt a little stilted at times but of course that’s just my opinion.

Echoes of home is a quick read full of sinister and spooky moments. A definite must if you love ghost stories!

I’ve read a couple of Jim Ody’s books now, but I have to say I think The Crazy Season is my favourite so far!

I saw the author posting about this a few weeks ago saying it was like a cross between the X-Files and Jonathan Creek and I can safely say that’s about right, a mix of the paranormal/weird along with an intriguing mystery.

The Crazy Season is the kind of novel that drags you in, and you just sit back and enjoy the rollercoaster ride.

The story follows Joel, complete with sidekick Melody as they investigate a string of teen suicides, twenty years apart in a small coastal town. When they dig a little deeper they find more and more lies, secrets and a whole heap of teen angst.

I loved the characters. Joel with his slightly awkward demeanor but he has a kind heart, who’s still grieving for the loss of his daughter and his wife in a coma. Then we have Melody, fierce and unapologetic, she brings Joel out of his shell. The two of them together were just a joy to read.

There was also a fantastic secondary cast of quirky characters that really added depth and a little dark humour to the story.

I felt the tension waned a little in the middle and I found my attention wandering a little, but the story pulled me back in with a nail biting ending.

The Crazy Season is a fantastic paranormal mystery, with a great cast of characters, that keeps you guessing until the end.

Jim writes dark psychological/thrillers, Horror and YA books that have endings you won’t see coming, and favours stories packed with wit. He has written over a dozen novels and many more short-stories spanning many genres.

Review:

I want to thank Emma at Damppebbles blog tours for my invite and Panther Publishing for providing me with a copy of Shadows of Hell in exchange for an honest review.

Having read Shadows of the woods last year and enjoyed it, I was interested to see how the story would carry on in Shadows of Hell. I would recommend that you read Shadows of the woods first as the storyline intertwines with Shadows of Hell.

Much like the first book, Shadows of Hell is a short, action packed horror with plenty of monsters, magic and mayhem along the way.

This story felt a little different to the first, grounded more in classic legends, with references to The Divine Comedy by Dante. I haven’t read the poem, but I’ve heard little bits about it over the years and enjoyed the author’s spin on the nine circles of Hell.

There was a new cast of characters, along with some guest stars from the previous book. There’s a psychic called Layla who also has a side gig being a fake medium and Chris and Alexis, a pair of paranormal investigators.I feel like there was a lot more to these characters and I hope to see more of them in future novels.

The writing is very visceral and I will warn those who are not that big a fan of gore or ghastly scenes that this might not be the novel for you.

Although I wasn’t entirely sold on the slightly religious undertone of the story, the ending leaves it open for another book which I will definitely be interested to read.

Shadows of Hell is a vivid and well-written horror which will take you on one Hell of a journey!

Duncan has been writing works of fiction since the age of seven. In those early days, his stories often involved himself and his friends being transported to fantasy worlds. I love a good ghost story, so I was eager to read Abberton House and see what spin the author gave to the classic haunted house trope.

Abberton House follows a dual timeline. First in 1916 we follow the story of Elizabeth, a young mother of three children whose doctor husband Henry has been called up to the war. The second timeline is set one hundred years later when Adam, Catherine, and their daughter, Bella, move into their new house to find something sinister lurking.

I really enjoyed the bit of mystery peppered throughout the story that really kept me hooked. I kept wondering what happened to Elizabeth and her family. Did she run off like everyone said or did something more disturbing happen? 

I would definitely recommend this story to people who enjoy a bit of a spooky horror story without too much blood or violence. It’s also quite a short book, but it still had a gentle pace and didn’t seem too rushed.

I wished the author would have amped up the creep factor a little more, as at times the ghosts felt like rather annoying houseguests rather than anything otherworldly. And there were a few aspects of the story that could have been explored further, certain minor characters that I would have liked to have seen more of.

Abberton House is a quick, spooky read with a hint of mystery that kept me entertained and intrigued throughout.

About the author:

Debbie is a multi-genre indie author and blogger who was born in Bradford and lives there with her husband, two-year-old daughter and anti-social cat Cleo. When she isn’t busy being a Mum, working for her local council or studying towards her Open University degree, she is busy focusing on her writing career.

Debbie doesn’t write to just one genre as she likes to write about anything. She is currently working on a romantic-comedy series but who knows what she will be working on in the future. As well as writing novels, short stories and blogs for her website, she is also reviewing other works by indie authors. This is the second in the Porter and The Gliss series, I read and enjoyed the first back in 2019 and I was very much looking forward to the sequel! I will say you should read the first Dead and Talking as some of the story carries over into this one.

Miniskirts are murder is the same mix of historical, paranormal and mystery as the first but this time instead of being set in the trenches of WW1 we’re taken to the Swinging Sixties, travelling to both LA and Germany to investigate the disappearance of a young actress named Rose.

There’s so much packed into this novel. Ghostly visions, gangsters, racism, women’s rights, spies, the Cold War and of course murder.

I was so glad that the gang of Porter, Feng, Namita, Karin and of course the Gliss were back together for this story, albeit with a lot more scars than the first book. We got to know each character a little better, each getting their own minor storyline weaved into the main story.

The sixties are a bit of a fascination to me. It seemed like such an interesting time, especially in Britain, and I feel it’s much romanticised by film and TV shows. This book really shines a light on the seedier side of the time, especially when it came to filmmaking. 

At the forefront of this novel is women’s rights and racism, which at times made it a little intense to read, I had to put the book down for a bit to get my emotions under control! 

Miniskirts are murder is an original and thought provoking read with plenty of mystery and mayhem along the way. I’m looking forward to the next adventure featuring Porter and The Gliss.

Des, 52, is a former Times journalist/BBC TV producer. Miniskirts are Murder is the second in the Porter and The Gliss Investigations series, following Dead & Talking in 2019.
Des likes to live out as much of the stories as possible and spent 3 months in the US researching this novel. He runs a film school in London and has just been commissioned to write a limited season TV series intended for Netflix. He is also a keen musician and through work has jammed with people like Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson and Jeff Lynne. He is married with 1 daughter.

So this is my second outing into the world of podcaster Scott King even though this is the fifth book in the series, (The previous novel I read was the first Six Stories which I read last year and loved.), but I thought, it’s lockdown, I’m living on the edge so I’ll just jump into Deity. For me it did work well as a standalone, even though it had a character from one of the previous books in it.

I have such a book hangover and it’s all Matt Wesolowski’s fault! I genuinely have not stopped thinking about Deity for days and how I am going to do justice in my review! 

If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s told through six podcast interviews, this time it’s interspersed with the last interview that Zach Crystal ever did. We’re taken through Zach Crystal’s rise to fame, then infamy and hear from detractors and obsessed superfans trying to actually find out who the real Zach Crystal was and what really happened to him.

I absolutely love the sort of supernatural aspect that is brought into the story, to run alongside the mystery that adds that extra layer of intrigue and creepiness. The paranormal element in this book took the form of a creature that legend says roams the woods around Zach Crystal’s property and is supposedly a portent of disaster.

Deity really kept me guessing until the end. There were a few subtle clues along the way but it was so cleverly written that I completely missed them.

A little warning, this story deals with themes of abuse and violence which some people may find a little upsetting.

Deity is a dark and devastating yet utterly addictive and I cannot recommend highly enough!

Matt Wesolowski is an author from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK. He is an English tutor for young people in care. I’ve read and enjoyed a few of Mark Tilbury’s books now and with the author himself re-releasing a number of books it’s a great opportunity to catch up on a few I’ve missed. The Liar’s Promise appealed to me as I really enjoy books about past lives or have a supernatural element to them.

The Liar’s Promise is a dark and at times disturbing read that gets you into the mind of a devious killer.

The POV’s mostly alternated between the unscrupulous killer and mother on the edge Mel.  Mel was a bit of a tough character to like but due to her troubled past but when you find out the true extent of her trauma you can forgive her for being the way she is.

My favourite part of the book is Mark Tilbury’s writing style. It’s vivid, visceral, a little gruesome at times but that lends to the authenticity of the ruthless killer.

The book really started off strong, with a lot of ‘whys’ and ”what ifs’ but I did feel like I wanted a little more mystery, a little more suspense but of course that’s just my opinion.

The Liar’s Promise is an intense read that gives you a peek at the darker side of humanity.

About The Author:

Mark lives in a small village in the lovely county of Cumbria, although his books are set in Oxfordshire where he was born and raised. 

After being widowed and raising his two daughters, Mark finally took the plunge and self-published two books on Amazon, The Revelation Room and The Eyes of the Accused.

Chapter 1 

A Fresh Pulse 

The outbreak began in springtime rumours.
Then, the airways and cables of the world charted the outbreak and panic, as the disease overwhelmed every population. Bombs and walls of fire tried to contain it. Chemical purges charred cities indiscriminately. In all, Rise counted barely five months from the beginning of the outbreak until everything was stilled, from late spring to mid-autumn. A lone SOS in Morse code was the last they heard from the human race, before Rise and his coven packed away their broadcast equipment, their radio, computers, and TV, putting it all into the depths of the root cellar. He waited a further full month, October. Then, and only then, did Rise leave the house. 

An earlier shower of hail had studded the courtyard’s cobblestones. Crimson leaves brightened the hedges that Rise had planted long ago to shade the kitchen windows. Once, Rise heard birdsong and the hum of the countryside the moment he stepped from the kitchen into the yard. But today, like so many days that came before, no sound. 

The rest of his coven were still on the roof, just finished with the dawn incantation. While the disease had overwhelmed all beyond Owl Court, every dawn, Rise and the two other vampires, Ogrim and Salter, spoke an incantation to conceal their little farmstead from the world. Even smoke from the nearest village of Dunsinann, or the hazy curtain on the horizon from Larnde City, never reached inside their walls. The coven always used the oldest names for such places; Ogrim joked that if they were to rename cities and towns as often as humans did, the coven would never get anything done. 

Rise wanted to slip away into the world and hoped to return with good news, to return with someone still human. The coven needed a fresh pulse. If he could achieve this, Rise reasoned as he stood on the back doorstep, the residents of Owl Court would surely forgive him for leaving. Hiding indoors, they saw footage of how the human dead now rose and walked. Rise had trawled the internet, when they still had it, watching feeds from around the world of corpses alive, of terrifying creatures that knew only brute and base destruction. 

“Where’re you going?” Ogrim spoke from the kitchen’s shade, so as not to let the weak sun touch his old body. 

“To find survivors,” Rise answered, as plainly as possible.

Review:

I got this book for my birthday after hearing good things about it, and I finally got around to reading it!

Gethsemane Brown is a talented musician, but because of some bad luck she ends up stuck in a small Irish town, landing a job at a local boys’ school. She is trying to make the most of it but it turns out the cottage she’s staying in is haunted by Eamon McCarthy, who was accused of killing his wife then himself. He begs her to investigate but Gethsemane ends up stirring up more trouble. It’s a race against time to stop the killer before they do any more damage.

I have to say I was in a bit of a reading funk before I picked this up and it knocked that right out of me.

Murder In G Major is a fantastically fun cozy mystery with a nice supernatural twist.

I usually find that most cozy mysteries tend to be a little slower paced, but that is not the case with this book, it’s got a snappy pace with plenty of shocks and surprises along the way.

I really liked Gethsemane, she is a successful musician, but she’s down to earth, straight talking, you know a character you can really root for. Eamon was her opposite, a bit arrogant but still likeable all the same. I really loved how Gethsemane and Eamon played off each other, with plenty of snarky comments!

I also appreciate there was a bit of Irish lingo thrown in there, and the book wasn’t overrun by Americanisms.

I kind of guessed early on who the killer would be, but it didn’t spoil my fun as I love to play detective as I read.

Murder In G Major is a must if you love cozy mysteries. Even if you’re not a fan of the supernatural ghostly aspect, I would still urge you to pick it up. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the next in the series.

A writer since childhood, I continued writing through college but put literary endeavors on hold to finish medical school and Family Medicine residency training. My medical career established, I returned to writing fiction.

I won a Lefty Award, was nominated for an Agatha Award and a Silver Falchion Award, and was chosen one of Suspense Magazine’s best debuts of 2016.

Raised in the southeast and schooled in the northeast, I migrated to the southwest after a three-year stint in Alaska reminded me how much I needed sunlight and warm weather. After a time in the desert, I missed deciduous trees so I headed northeast to the Chicago area. I completed Southern Methodist University’s Writer’s Path program in Dallas, Texas.
