Title: Clarissa by Karl Drinkwater

Date Published: 1st June 2021

Genre: Sci-fi novella

Description:

If you’re reading this: HELP! I’ve been kidnapped.

Me and my big sister stayed together after our parents died. We weren’t bothering anybody. But some mean government agents came anyway, and split us up.

Now I’m a prisoner on this spaceship. The agents won’t even say where we’re going.

I hate them.

And things have started to get a bit weird. Nullspace is supposed to be empty, but when I look out of the skywindows I can see … something. Out there. And I think it wants to get in here. With us.

My name is Clarissa. I am ten years old.

And they will all be sorry when my big sister comes to rescue me.

Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and the author for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Clarissa has been kidnapped and taken away from her sister Opal, put onto a spaceship bound for somewhere unknown. She fights back against her captors at every turn, but strange things start happening on the spaceship that nobody can ignore.

I’ve read the previous two novellas in the Lost Tales of Solace series and like the others Clarissa can be read as a standalone.

What an enjoyable ride this book was! Action, mystery and a sassy main character which is everything I want in a sci-fi story.

Clarissa was such a well-done character. I could almost hear her voice in my mind as I was reading the story. It’s always difficult for adults to portray a convincing child, but Karl Drinkwater does so well with Clarissa. She’s a bit of an old soul, at the age of ten she is smart but also at the same time still has that naivete of children her age. Through the story she’s always coming up with imaginative descriptions and saying, one of my favourite was ‘shoes are foot prisons’ and I completely agree.

Clarissa is a short but action packed novella that had me gripped from beginning to end.

About The Author:

Karl Drinkwater writes thrilling SF, suspenseful horror, and contemporary literary fiction. Whichever you pick you’ll find interesting and authentic characters, clever and compelling plots, and believable worlds.

Karl has lived in many places but now calls Scotland his home. He’s an ex-librarian with degrees in English, Classics, and Information Science. He also studied astrophysics for a year at university, surprising himself by winning a prize for “Outstanding Performance”.

When he isn’t writing he loves guitars, exercise, computer and board games, nature, and vegan cake. Not necessarily in that order.

Review:

I want to thank Red Dog Press for providing me with a copy of Dead In The Water in exchange for an honest review.

I’m so glad to be back with Adam and Colin for the second in the Stonebridge mysteries. If you haven’t read the first, The Curious Case of Daniel Costello, Dead In The Water can be read as a standalone, but I would personally recommend reading the first as it’s such a good novella!

If you don’t know this series, they are cozy mysteries set in the small Irish town of Stonebridge following two amateur sleuths and best friends Adam and Colin.

A grieving widow comes to Adam, convinced that her husband didn’t drown by accident. Adam is busy with his new gardening business but the lure of a mystery is too much for him to turn down, even roping poor put upon Colin to help.

As I said in my previous review, both Adam and Colin are very likeable sleuths and I enjoyed the fact Colin got a more central role in this book rather than just being a sidekick type character.

This story has a snappy pace and even though it’s only a short book, there’s still plenty of suspects, clues and red herrings to keep you guessing.

I felt the actual mystery wasn’t quite as funny as the first, but of course that’s just my opinion.

Dead in the water is a well-written whodunnit with likeable sleuths underpinned with some subtle humour. I’m looking forward to more Stonebridge mysteries in the future!

Title: Grubane (Lost Tales of Solace 2) by Karl Drinkwater

Date Published: 13th June 2020

Genre: Sci-Fi/ Novella

Description:

Major Grubane is commander of the Aurikaa, the most feared cruiser in the UFS arsenal.

His crew is handpicked and fiercely loyal. Together, they have never failed a mission, and their reputation precedes them.

But this time he’s been sent to a key planet that is caught up in political tensions at the centre of the freedom debate. What he thought was a simple diplomatic mission turns out to be the hardest choice of his career. His orders: eliminate one million inhabitants of the planet, and ensure their compliance.

Grubane has also rediscovered an ancient game called chess, and plays it against the ship AI as a form of mental training. But maybe it could be more than that as he finds himself asking questions. Can orders be reinterpreted? How many moves ahead is it possible for one man to plan? And how many players are involved in this game?

Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and the author for providing me with a copy of Grubane in exchange for an honest review.

This is actually the second novella in the Lost Tales of Solace series but each story is written as a standalone so you don’t need to have read the other book in the series to read this one. Each of the novellas also tie into the author’s Lost Solace series there’s plenty to read for sci-fi lovers out there.

I read and enjoyed  the first book in the series Helene, a couple of months ago so I was eager to see what Karl Drinkwater had in store for me this time.

Grubane is a major in the UFS (they basically run most of the colonies in space and pretty much want to take over everything). He’s been sent on a mission that quickly turns ugly and we see the fearsome major in action.

What I love about these books is the unique perspective the author uses to tell the story, this time it was mostly from the AI Aurikaa 12’s POV. As the story goes on, you can see it becoming more self aware, trying to interpret the world around it, particularly Grubane himself.

For me, this book lacked a little of the humour of the first book Helene but that was a minor thing overall.

Grubane is a slick sci-fi story and a perfect way to escape reality for a while.

Review:

I want to thank Emma at Damppebbles blog tours for inviting me on this tour and Panther Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Joe and his friends decide to go camping for his stag do but instead of a nice lad’s night out, they find something sinister and end up fighting for their lives. Who will survive?

Shadows of The Woods is a short sharp shock filled book!

There was plenty of fast paced action, adventure and horrifying scenes for any horror fan to get their teeth into.

This very much a monster driven story and my goodness the monsters were a little terrifying! I don’t want to give away any spoilers but I’m very wary of shadows now.

The book did contain the old camping in the woods trope but I feel the author made it their own and took a fresh spin on it.

There was quite a large cast of characters and with this being a novella, I felt we didn’t get to know the characters quite as well as I’d liked.

Shadows of The Woods is at times a gruesome and adventure packed novel that I genuinely couldn’t predict when I was reading it.

About The Author:

Duncan has spent most of his life in a small market town in West Yorkshire — the same town in which most of his stories are set under the guise of Ravenfield. Duncan has been writing works of fiction since the age of seven. In those early days, his stories often involved himself and his friends being transported to fantasy worlds. However, as a teenager, Duncan fell in love with horror movies and his writing took a whole new direction.

Duncan still lives in West Yorkshire with his partner and their two young children. He also has slight obsession with Spider-Man and the actor Bruce Campbell, as well as having an addiction to vinyl records, coffee and Lego.

Helene Full Tour Banner

Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

So this is a prequel novella to the author’s Lost Solace series and having not read any of the other books, it was a perfect place for me to start

Helene is a futuristic sci-fi short story, the perfect mix of intrigue, entertainment plus a dash of humour.

Helene is a great character. Smart, brave but there’s also a little bit of mystery to her. I absolutely loved the way the author played her off ViraUHX, it was so much fun to read!

In large part the story is mostly dialogue, with ViraUHX voice written in all capitals which I didn’t mind. Although it got a little hard to read in places especially when the AI decided to go on a rant.

The ending of the book isn’t a cliffhanger so to speak but it does leave it open for the next book, giving you a little peek almost of what’s to come. I was so intrigued by the ending, I’ve put the other two novels in this series on my wishlist.

My only issue was I wished the story was longer!

Helene is a well written and compelling sci-fi story that will leave you wanting more!

The Fathers, The Sons and the Anxious Ghost banner V2

Review:

I want to thank Emma at Damppebbles blog tours for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a bit of a sucker for a usual title and I found the blurb very intriguing, even though this is not my usual sort of book, I thought I’d give it a go.

The Fathers, The Sons and The Anxious Ghost is a short novella, just over a hundred pages long, but it has a lot of emotion packed into it.

Told through multiple perspectives, it begins with the fathers, then jumps ten years into the future to their sons showing how a tragic event can have a ripple effect on people’s lives.

I didn’t find most of the characters that likeable but to me the fascinating storyline made up for this.

This book is very much a story of two halves, I felt the first half, story and character wise was stronger and I feel that I would have preferred to have been focussed on the fathers for the whole thing.

I’d recommend The Fathers, The Sons and The Anxious Ghost to anyone who likes a real character driven story.

Quick #Reviews Three Cozy Mysteries

So today I have so quick reviews of some cozy mysteries I picked up for free on Kindle. They are still free at time of this post:

Title: Then There Were Nun (Nun of your business Book 1) by Dakota Cassidy

Description:

then there were nunMy name is Sister Trixie Lavender, and I’m an occasionally possessed excommunicated nun.

Okay, that’s a lot to swallow at once. But it’s true I was booted from the convent after doing something unspeakable. Something I had no control over. Something that lives inside me to this day, exploding out like that chestburster in Alien when I least suspect it.

But I have help. My amazing friend Coop—the demon who saved me from an ugly end—remains by my side, loyal and true. She was Hell’s best tattoo artist back in the day, and together with my designs, we’re opening Inkerbelle’s Tattoos and Piercings, right in the heart of Portland’s most darling district, Cobbler Cove.

Of course, our bid to fit in would be a little less rocky if I could help Coop assimilate with humans, keep a lid on our sassy talking owl, Livingston…oh, and if someone hadn’t killed our landlord on day one—in our shop.

This mystery-loving, bumbling ex-nun and her trusty demon sidekick are on the case! If I don’t bumble my way right into my own demise first…

This new cozy mystery series from USA Today bestselling cozy mystery author Dakota Cassidy is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as Trixie and Coop hunt for a killer. Then There Were Nun is book 1 in the all new, Nun of Your Business series.

Review:

I saw this and thought, ‘ooh, I like the sound of that.’ An ex nun who happens to get possessed by an evil spirit now and again, her best friend is a demon and there’s also a cheeky possessed owl called Livingston.

Unfortunately it just fell a little short.

Don’t get me wrong the writing was good as was the overall mystery but there are a few issues I had that spoilt my enjoyment a little.

The thing I didn’t realise was these characters had already appeared in the author’s other series and the constant references to ‘Stevie’, which I assume is the main character in her other series, got a bit annoying.

It also sticks to the no violence rule of a cozy mystery, which all the violence happens sort of ‘off screen’. This kind of irritated me as there was a scene which the main character gets possessed, then we’re told about it afterwards by another character. Maybe this sort of subject matter is a bit too gritty for this sort of novel.

Also I know Livingston was meant to be Irish but he ended up sounding Scottish most of the time.

The main redeeming factor was Coop, she’s a great character, who’s trying to understand why humans do what they do, added some fun to the overall story.

I don’t think I’ll be carrying on with this series but I have picked up the first in the author’s other series Witch Slapped to see if I like that any better.

Title: Better Off Wed (Annabelle Archer Book 1) by Laura Durham

Description:

BetterOffWed1A guest with an axe to grind. A bridal party full of secrets. This wedding planner is about to turn detective…

Annabelle Archer is a few days away from completing the most elaborate wedding she’s ever planned. As she daydreams about the doors her perfect reception could unlock for her business, she stumbles over a dead body at the bottom of the stairs. The planner is horrified to recognize the body lying underfoot as the mother of the bride. When the police determine the victim was poisoned, Annabelle’s best friend and caterer becomes the prime suspect.

As she works to clear her best friend’s name, Annabelle discovers the bride’s mother had more enemies and secrets than she could ever fit on the guest list. To save her business and her friend, D.C.’s premiere wedding planner must find the killer. But will getting too close to the action make this wedding day her last?

Better Off Wed is the Agatha Award-winning first book in the Annabelle Archer Wedding Planner Mystery Series. If you like hilarious-yet-deadly whodunits, charming characters, and delightfully witty tales, you’ll love Laura Durham’s cozy mystery series.

Review:

This has been on my kindle since 2017 and I didn’t realise it, oops!

Annabelle is in the middle of one of the most high profile weddings she’s ever organised when she finds the mother of bride from hell dead at the bottom of a set of stairs. She of course starts to investigate putting herself in danger.

This was such a cute little cozy mystery! Fast paced and fun its perfect if you’re looking for something light hearted.

Two stand out characters for me were Richard, Annabelle’s camp caterer friend and Leatrice her nosey neighbour who loves a good mystery. They added a good dose of humour to the story, the back and forth between Annabelle and Richard really made me smile.

I did guess quite early on who the killer was but I read a lot of mysteries, it’s quite difficult to surprise me.

My only minor annoyance was Kate, Annabelle’s assistant who I felt was a little flat as a character, her main attributes being the fact she likes dating men and gets common sayings wrong.

I already have the second in this series which I’m looking forward to.

Title: Killer Cupcakes by Leighann Dobbs

Description:

Things are going great for Lexy Baker. She’s finally opened her dream bakery, gotten rid of herkiller cupcakes cheating boyfriend and settled into her grandmothers house with her perky dog Sprinkles at her side.

But her blissful life doesn’t last long. When her ex boyfriend is found poisoned with cupcakes from her bakery, Lexy finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation headed up by her hunky neighbour detective Jack Perillo.

With the help of a gang of iPad toting, would-be detective grandmothers, Lexy decides to take it upon herself to find the real murderer in order to clear her name and get her bakery back in business.

As things heat up on the murder trail, in the kitchen and between Lexy and the hunky detective, it’s a race against time to put the real murderer behind bars and get back to baking.

Will Lexy get her man?

Review:

So I really enjoyed The Oyster Bay series by Leighann Dobbs so when I saw this for free on Kindle I thought I’d check it out.

This series features Lexy Baker, who has just opened her dream bakery. She thrown into a murder investigation after her ex boyfriend is poisoned by some cupcakes from her bakery. There’s a little bit of romance on the cards for her too, with her handsome policeman neighbour who happens to be investigating the case.

So this was actually the shortest one of the three novels I read, it took me only an hour to read. It is also a dual perspective novel, with POV’s from both Jack and Lexy, which made it stand out from the other cozies I’ve read recently.

I will say that it was quick and enjoyable but I felt it was a little rushed in places. I would have liked to get to know the characters a little better and see the romance blossoming a bit more between Jack and Lexy.

A good start to the series, I’m not sure if I’ll pick up the next one but I haven’t decided yet.

What about you do you enjoy cozy mysteries? Have you read any of these? Do you have any recommendations for cozies I should check out?

A Little Hotel in Cornwall Cover

Title: A Little Hotel In Cornwall by Laura Briggs

Date Published: 30th April 2019

Genre: Chicklit

Description:

Struggling American waitress and aspiring novelist Maisie Clark dreams of becoming a full-time writer — even though in real life she’s just lost her chance at an exclusive writer’s mentorship program that would give her novel its big break. Desperate, she decides to take a chance and ask her favourite writer, a celebrated but reclusive English novelist, to help her find a second chance.

When she receives the author’s reply in an envelope with a Cornish postmark, Maisie decides not to take the writer’s half-hearted ‘no’ for an answer. With nothing to lose, she takes off for the author’s last known location, a beautiful hotel on Cornwall’s western coast. But when the hotel mistakes her for the latest applicant for a maid’s position, Maisie finds herself given an opportunity too good to lose … and a chance for a summer adventure far bigger than she ever imagined.

Surrounded by breathtaking Cornwall and working in an elegant hotel, Maisie’s world becomes one of secret identities, quirky friends, and unintentional mishaps — and despite reminders of past relationship disasters, a certain handsome, charming local resident Sidney Daniels has her conflicted about her heart’s desires, too.

Will Maisie find the chance she’s been waiting for — and a possible new romance — in her perfect Cornish summer?

Purchase Link: http://smarturl.it/alittlehotelbook1

Review:

So if you’ve heard of Laura Briggs before, you may know she does have another set of novels with Cornwall in the title but this is a completely new series with a new cast of characters to get to know.

Masie Clark wants nothing more than to be an author. In an attempt to find a mentor she journeys to Cornwall, to find her favourite author the mysterious Alistair Davies. When she gets there a case of mistaken identity means she’s offered a job as a maid with a probationary period of two weeks. That should be enough time to find Alistair Davies, right?

Wrong! No matter what she does disaster ensues, then she bumps into her ex boyfriend Ronnie. She becomes torn between him and local lad Sidney Daniels. Will she find the love she’s always wanted and get the publishing contract of her dreams?

The theme of this book is all about taking chances, you never know what might happen!

The beautiful Cornish coast really is the perfect setting for this lovely little novella. It’s so well described, I really want to visit there now!

Maisie is one of the those characters you just automatically root for, I especially enjoyed the fact she was a wannabe author like myself. Her supporting cast of characters are also a good mix of the eccentric and interesting.

I have to be honest, the introduction of her ex boyfriend, I mean he happens to be at the same hotel as Maisie at the same time, felt a little too convenient and a little contrived but of course that’s just my opinion.

A little hotel is Cornwall is the light hearted read that will make you fall in love with the characters and Cornwall itself!

About The Author:

Laura Briggs is the author of several chick lit and romance stories, including the Top 100A Little Hotel in Cornwall Author Pic Amazon UK seller ‘A Wedding in Cornwall’. #Review The Windmill Cafe: Summer Breeze by Poppy Blake @poppyblakebooks @HarperImpulse

Title: The Windmill Café: Summer Breeze by Poppy Blake (Book One)

Publisher: HarperImpulse

Date Published: 9th March 2018

Genre: Novella, Chicklit

Description:

As Rosie Barnes serves glasses of tangy lemonade and ice-cold prosecco at her summer garden party, she couldn’t be happier. The Windmill Café, with its peppermint green sails is a roaring success and has given Rosie a chance to escape the heartbreak of her busy life in London.

But then disaster strikes when popstar Suki Richards is taken unexpectedly ill at the party. Now all eyes are on Rosie…have her famous raspberry cupcakes poisoned her most high-profile guest? Or is someone else trying to damage Suki’s chance of stardom?

If Rosie wants to save her picture-perfect life, and the reputation of her beloved Windmill Café, she’s going to have to get to the bottom of the mystery…and fast!

Review:

So due to a scheduling mishap I had a little gap so I thought I’d pick up first in the Windmill Cafe series which has been on my tbr list since the beginning of the year (oops!).

Former florist Rosie Barnes moved to Norfolk after a particularly bad break up, landing a job at the Windmill cafe and going back to one of her first loves, baking.

She convinced the owner to throw a summer garden party and manages to get up and coming pop star Suki Richards and her friends to attend but disaster strikes when she is taken ill and her future hangs in the balance.

With the help of her new friends, especially the handsome Matt she must get to the bottom of the mystery and save her job and the Windmill cafe!

So from the absolutely gorgeous cover I was expecting some sort of sweet rom-com but actually it was more a romance mixed with a bit of cosy mystery, which as a big mystery lover I adored! It is a little heavier on the romance aspect but after so many gruesome crime books I’ve been reading of late, it made a nice change.

I felt very sorry for Rosie, she obviously has very low self-esteem and suffers from a compulsion to clean especially when she feels things around her are getting out of control. It’s nice to see through the book how she grows and becomes more confident.

Matt is also a sweet character, practical, unwavering in his support of Rosie but he hides a bit of heartbreak in his past himself.

I would have liked to dig a little deeper into Matt’s story and some of her other friend’s like Mia but I know there are two other books so I hope to get to know the characters better. Also I wasn’t a fan of the Poriot like gathering of the suspects together before an arrest is made but that’s just me being a bit fussy.

Overall The Windmill Café is a sweet, light-hearted novella with a subtle nod to classic crime fiction and good dollop of romance, perfect for a bit of escapism. A great start to the series!

Finest Supermarket in Kabul - cover image

Excerpt:

I’ve been in Kabul for just under twenty-four hours. I flew in yesterday from Lashkar Gah, in Helmand Province, after a heated argument with my editor earlier in the week during which I suggested a temporary reassignment to Kabul. Eric demanded I stay in the south for another three-week stint embedded with a US platoon. According to him, my stories from the US outpost were gripping and getting positive reactions from readers. Certainly, the embed was riveting – my first time moving around with US platoons – and gave me stories I couldn’t otherwise have written: intense firefights on a patrol, the evacuation of a wounded soldier, discussions about post-traumatic stress disorder, and fortifying against ambushes. But after three months of only covering action on the front line, I felt my outlook had started to skew by living and breathing the life of an American soldier. The longer I stayed in Helmand, the harder it was becoming to be okay with just telling one side of the story, as opposed to the broader picture. It was when I began saying “T-Ban” instead of Taliban that I knew I needed to get out. Meanwhile, Eric kept insisting that front-line coverage was our best news feature and refused to accept my other ideas, no matter how vigorously I pushed.

So I travelled to Kabul of my own accord to regain some perspective. I figure I’ll hold out an olive branch to Eric later, a magazine-length piece about how local ex-combatants are using the continuing conflict to their advantage. From fellow journalists, I’ve heard about former warlords, their identities and deeds well known, who’ve built massive houses painted in vivid carnival colours in the centre of Kabul and are living the high life, seemingly without repercussion. Interviews with a few of them, along with regular ex-Taliban fighters who got away from the fray, will form the story’s core; here and there, I’ll filter in views from ordinary people. I’m pretty sure Eric will go for an article with a military focus, even if it’s set in Kabul. Plus, he and I go way back, having both started out at the Chicago Tribune after studying at Columbia College Chicago fifteen years ago. If things go completely awry, I’ll hightail it back to Helmand.

I had my initial foray into Afghanistan’s real world yesterday morning. As I entered the plane bound for Kabul, I saw rows and rows of Pashtun men with long beards and turbans or woolen, round-topped hats with thick edging. My heart skipped a beat, as Pashtuns were the ethnic group that had birthed the Taliban, and I wondered if any were Taliban fighters. No one here would protect me from danger, and my visit wasn’t even sanctioned by my boss.

A familiar blast of adrenaline rushes through me.

Jakob stamps out his cigarette and leaps up while I gather my coat and Tish’s things under my arm. We race for the door. Ahead, I see Ben still on his phone but can’t hear him. As news of the explosion circulates, the room’s noise level surges and nervous energy grips the space.

We pick Tish up at the entrance and rush through the security gates, easily retrieving our various IDs and my passport as Ben advises that he’s called for a taxi to pick us up and that Masood, his interpreter, will meet us there.

After three minutes of energetic conversation about what we’ll find at the Finest, the four of us pile into the black Toyota Corolla that has pulled up. Sitting on the raised middle seat in the back, I have to duck my head to glimpse the street scene outside. It looks calm and oddly sedate considering what we know has just happened. Fortunately, traffic is far less jammed than on our morning’s walk over from the Safi.

We’re silent; our initial eagerness to cover this story has given way to an unpleasant realization that we will soon be confronting the bomb’s aftermath of chaos, destruction and injury. Jakob has already explained that the Finest is a convenience store that stocks expensive Western products like Nutella and peanut butter, so almost no Afghans ever shop there. An expat target, then, I ponder.
