#BlogTour Q&A Sixty Minutes by Tony Salter @rararesources @TonyOxford #AuthorInterview

Hello lovelies! Today I have a fabulous Q&A with author Tony Salter, plus a giveaway to win a copy of Sixty Minutes (see bottom of the post) but first a little about the book:

Sixty Minutes - Kindle Cover

Title: Sixty Minutes by Tony Salter

Date Published: 29th October 2019

Genre: Thriller

Description:

Five different people. Five separate lives. Sixty minutes to bind them for ever.

Hassan, Jim, Shuna, Dan and Nadia come from very different worlds. If life were straightforward, their paths would never cross. But our lives are rarely that simple and, as the clock ticks away the minutes of a single hour on a July morning, fate draws all five together in a headlong rush towards disaster.

Who are the heroes and who are the villains?

Tony Salter’s latest novel leaves us guessing right up to the last page.

Q&A with Tony Salter

Can you tell me a little bit about your book?

Sixty Minutes is my fourth novel and is somewhat different from my others although it is still very much a thriller. Without giving too much away, I am quite limited, but the novel explores the actions of five very-different characters over a one-hour period. The reasons for each character to be present  (and any connections between them) appear as the story progresses.

We learn to know and understand all of the characters, although they are not all totally likeable. We see different sides to them, some of which are hopefully unexpected.

The core plot which drives the tension over the sixty minute period is reasonably obvious early on, but the way it plays out remains uncertain until the end. I wasn’t sure how it would finish myself until I reached the final chapters.

It is not trying to be a deep philosophical book, but it does touch onto some some sensitive themes and will hopefully make readers think a little once they’ve finished.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from?

I imagined the final scene (I can’t remember exactly why) and wrote it as a short story. I then realised that there was much too much room for cliché and stereotype in the short story format and decided to try to address the issues in detail and head on. I am aware that I am setting myself up for accusations of cultural appropriation, but don’t believe it is right to restrict an author’s imagination in that way. I don’t mind if a reader feels my characters aren’t real or even if they think the plot is dull and boring (actually I do mind – a lot), but do believe that an author should have the right to create characters who have very different backgrounds and experiences to the author’s own.

If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be?

A tight tense literary thriller which will keep you gripped until the final page.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

I would normally write at a standing desk for four to five hours after breakfast. I set myself a target of 1500 words, but am happy to stop at 1200 or so, if I’m not feeling focused or if I have  other plans. I might sometimes do an hour or two in the afternoon but not as a rule. I do my basic research and check emails as I go. (thereby breaking the author’s golden rule of not being connected to the internet while writing)

If you could recommend just one book to read what would it be and why?

Just now, Wake by Anna Hope

Who are your favourite authors?

Kate Atkinson, Kazuo Ishiguro, David Mitchell, Salman Rushdie … an impossible question!

Is writing your only job? If not, what is your other job?

I consider writing to be my full-time job now, but am also Chairman of a travel technology company which gives me the luxury of being able to write when I want to.

Tell me something interesting about yourself (that’s not in your author bio!)

When I was almost eighteen, I hitched down to the South of France from the UK with a friend. We slept on the beach in Cassis and woke up to find that everything we had  was gone. Passports, money, clothes – the lot. It made for an interesting holiday!

What are you currently working on?

I am working on a new thriller which features one of the characters from Sixty Minutes, Nadia. This will be released in 2020

I am also working in the background on a historical  novel based on my grandmother’s diary which describes her journey from Brighton to Harbin in Manchuria in 1915 (via Newcastle, Norway Sweden, Petrograd and the Transsiberian Express). The book will also cover the six years she spent in Harbin, where she married my grandfather and gave birth to (and lost) her first son. This will probably take a couple of years to complete.

#BlogTour Beyond The Moon by Catherine Taylor @CathTaylorNovel @rararesources #Promo #Giveaway

Hello lovelies! Today I’m bringing you a Book Spotlight for Beyond The Moon with a giveaway to win a copy of the book (see bottom of the post) but first a little about the novel:

BeyondTheMoonFinalBookCover

Title: Beyond the Moon by Catherine Taylor

Date Published: 25th June 2019

Publisher: The Cameo Press Ltd

Genre: Time Slip/Romance

Description:

“Outlander meets Birdsong is this haunting debut timeslip novel, where a strange twist of fate connects a British soldier fighting in the First World War and a young woman living in modern-day England a century later. Shortlisted for the Eharmony/Orion Write Your Own Love Story Prize 2019”

In 1916 1st Lieutenant Robert Lovett is a patient at Coldbrook Hall military hospital in Sussex, England. A gifted artist, he’s been wounded fighting in the Great War. Shell shocked and suffering from hysterical blindness he can no longer see his own face, let alone paint, and life seems increasingly hopeless.

A century later in 2017, medical student Louisa Casson has just lost her beloved grandmother – her only family. Heartbroken, she drowns her sorrows in alcohol on the South Downs cliffs – only to fall accidentally part-way down. Doctors fear she may have attempted suicide, and Louisa finds herself involuntarily admitted to Coldbrook Hall – now a psychiatric hospital, an unfriendly and chaotic place.

Then one day, while secretly exploring the old Victorian hospital’s ruined, abandoned wing, Louisa hears a voice calling for help, and stumbles across a dark, old-fashioned hospital room. Inside, lying on the floor, is a mysterious, sightless young man, who tells her he was hurt at the Battle of the Somme, a WW1 battle a century ago. And that his name is Lieutenant Robert Lovett…

Two people, two battles: one against the invading Germans on the battlefields of 1916 France, the other against a substandard, uncaring mental health facility in modern-day England. Two journeys begun a century apart, but somehow destined to coincide – and become one desperate struggle to be together.

Part WW1 historical fiction, part timeslip love story – and at the same time a meditation on the themes of war, mental illness, identity and art – Beyond The Moon sweeps the reader on an unforgettable journey through time.

#BookSpotlight Death in Smoke (The Cape Mysteries #2) by Barbara Elle @barbaraelleauth @RRBookTours1 #RRBookTours #Thriller #Books #promo #Giveaway #excerpt

Congratulations to author, Barbara Elle, on the release of her exciting thriller, Death in Smoke! I have an exclusive excerpt, plus your chance to win a $25 Amazon Gift card but first a bit about the book:

Death in Smoke Cover

Title: Death in Smoke (The Cape Mysteries #2) by Barbara Elle

Publication Date: 5th December 2019

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Description:

A bloodied body buried in a snowbank on a remote island off Cape Cod.

A cold case in Kansas.

What’s the connection between two unrelated murders over a thousand miles away and decades apart?

In Death In Smoke, the thrilling sequel to Death In Vermilion, artist Leila Goodfriend unravels the truth about two brutal killings.

From Cuttyhunk Island to a Native American casino in Kansas, Leila tracks a trail of blood and revenge, littered with smoke screens and stone relics of a faded past.

Once again, Leila has to trust her instincts, which puts her at odds with Detective John Grace—a relationship of attraction that, in the end, reveals a tragic secret from her own past.

Despite the detective’s warnings, Leila puts her life at risk, obsessed with proving her friend’s innocence, at least of murder.

Death In Smoke, the new psychological thriller from acclaimed author Barbara Elle, takes readers on an inner and physical journey across clashing cultures and time, challenging assumptions about what is truth—what remains a mystery.

Available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y7PT1B6

Excerpt:

Her fingers bled as she dug, the blood spread like a stain, but she couldn’t know now whether it was her blood, or the blood seeping up from beneath the surface.

She knew what she’d find now. There was no urgency. Not anymore. Not with this spreading stain. She slowed down. She brushed aside the snow carefully, like an archaeologist at a dig; she had to see the eyes. The eyes would tell whether there was life, or death. It was silent, except for the pounding of blood in her ears.

The blood, coagulated into a fibrous mesh-like flesh, was more like a birth than a death. It was a woman. The crown of the skull had been split, maybe cracked along a fissure? The features were contorted. Had there been time to beg, no, no, don’t? Had there been time to scream?

She brushed the bloody flecks away. Horrified. There was no question now. The eyes were open. The woman was dead.

It was a queer, horrible irony that suddenly struck Leila: she had found another dead body. Iris. Now, there was this poor woman. This was supposed to be a walk in the woods.

Although the violence of death had distorted the features of its victim, there was something familiar in the angular chin, the cheekbones, and the mannish set of the jaw. It was a face she never expected to see again.

Damn. It was Susie.

Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

So I’m back with Beth Haldane for the seventh in the London murder mystery series, I can’t quite believe there’s been that many! I would recommend having read a few of the previous books before getting stuck into this book, as there a few recurring storylines that you might miss out on.

Beth and Harry’s relationship is moving to the next level, as he moves into her house. Unable to cope with all of his boxes, Beth reluctantly agrees to look at houses outside her beloved Dulwich.

She gets a nasty shock at a house in Sydenham when she finds the body of the estate agent. Unable to leave the mystery to her policeman boyfriend Harry York, she starts to investigate. Can Beth figure whodunnit before anyone else gets hurt?

It’s so nice to be back with this series, it’s like catching up with old friends.

Beth is still on top form, procrastinating from the really big issues in her life and concentrating on solving mysteries. I also enjoyed the little bit of tension that builds throughout the novel between Beth and Harry surrounding their moving in together, I felt it added a whole new layer to their relationship.

My only issue with the book was that I felt that the murders sort of got pushed to the side slightly in favour of the other story lines within the book.

The Slayings in Sydenham is a fast paced and fun cosy mystery with likeable characters that you can’t help going back to.

Review:

Addison wants nothing more than to be a nurse but is getting nowhere. Out of the blue she is offered a job working at Paradise House. But the moment she sets foot there strange things start to happen and she thinks there’s more to her new employers than what meets the eye.

The Haunting at Paradise House is a combination of fantastical elements with ghostly goings on, intrigue, mystery and a dash of romance added to the mix.

There’s plenty of spooky scenes, with some very creepy dolls, which made me shiver as I’m not a fan of dolls in general anyway.

I’ve read a couple of novels with reaper type characters in and I enjoyed the author’s different take on them.

I liked Addison. She is strong and more than a little stubborn with a caffeine addiction and a clingy boyfriend. Even with all the craziness going on around her, she keeps a level head.

I have to be honest, the beginning of the novel was a little confusing and I felt there were aspects that were a bit rushed but of course that’s just my opinion.

The Haunting at Paradise House is a fast paced spooky read that will capture your imagination.

#BlogTour #Excerpt #Giveaway The Giving Heart by Toni Blake @AuthorToniBlake @HQNBooks @RRBookTours1 #Romance #TheGivingHeart #RRBookTours #HQNBooks

Hello lovelies, today I have a fabulous giveaway and an exclusive excerpt from The Giving Heart by Toni Blake but first a little about the book:

The Giving Heart by Toni Blake - Cover

Title: The Giving Heart by Toni Blake

Publisher:  HQN Books

Publication Date: 29th October 2019

Genre: Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance

Book description:

Spend a white Christmas on Summer Island, where the fires are warm and the romance is hotter.

Lila Sloan wonders why she ever thought house-sitting for her sister Meg on the remote Summer Island was a good idea. And to make matters worse, local real estate developer Beck Grainger is trying to cut down the beautiful trees that line the property. Lila can’t let this happen; Meg will never forgive her.

Beck can understand Lila’s anger—sort of. The trees are actually on the neighboring property, and the land was zoned for development months ago, so his plans were no secret. But he dislikes being at odds with his friend’s sister, especially because Lila is appealing in every way: loyal, quick-witted and completely stunning.

Lila hates that she’s so attracted to Beck, who seems like a genuinely good man, despite his tree-murdering tendencies. And their chemistry is off the charts. She just wishes he’d let this development go. As Summer Island counts down to a snowy Christmas, Lila and Beck will have to strike a compromise that seems impossible for them both—or risk losing the best thing either of them has ever had.

Excerpt:

Five long, cold minutes later a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a winter coat with blue jeans and some weird, worn, leathery sort of cowboy hat on his head came walking down from the direction of West Bluff. Despite herself, and for the first time ever in her life, she found herself envying work boots like the ones he had on because they appeared so sturdy and dry. She braced herself for a fight.

When she looked up at him, two things struck her simultaneously. First, he was ridiculously handsome—with dark hair peeking out from beneath that dumb hat, and dark stubble on his chiseled jaw to match. And second, his warm brown eyes wore that same confused, cautious look as the man on the bulldozer’s as he said, “I’m Beck Grainger. And…there seems to be some sort of problem here?”

Lila drew back. This was Beck Grainger? Who Meg had spoken of so fondly? And even Suzanne, too, during their short visit yesterday, had mentioned him as a friend. Meg had told her he’d been interested in dating Suzanne and she’d declined, but they both still thought he was a great guy.

“Well, I’m Lila Sloan,” she said. “And yes, there’s a problem. I’m not letting you destroy Meg’s property value like this.”

Beck Grainger’s dark eyebrows shot up beneath his leathery brim. “You’re Meg’s sister?”

She gave a terse, crisp nod.

The handsome man sighed, shifting his weight from one work boot to the other. “Look, no one is trying to destroy anyone’s property value. And I assumed Meg knew about this. It’s not a secret. It was brought publicly before the town council and zoned for residential use back in the spring.”

Ugh. None of this was good news. But Lila was certain Meg didn’t know. Her sister had been dealing with a lot this past year and perhaps hadn’t been paying attention to island business. They’d actually discussed these very woods over the Thanksgiving table last week, recalling how they’d played here as children when their grandmother was still alive and running the place. Meg said that a couple of years ago she’d crossed the stream to plant some shade-loving trillium and blue cranesbill among the trees, and that the small blooms had added color visible from the patio each of the last two summers. Meg loved and valued these trees. And Lila brimmed with anger that no one had made Meg aware of this—but that was neither here nor there. “I can assure you she doesn’t know.”

The handsome man’s brow narrowed skeptically. “Well, if it’s a problem for her, why didn’t she just pick up the phone and call me?”

“Because she’s away right now—traveling. And even if she were here, she wouldn’t have known you were the person to call. And maybe she would have done something sensible—because Meg is definitely sensible—like contact someone on the town council. But I, being less sensible and more rash, took a more direct approach. Meg left me in charge of the inn while she’s away—and I can’t let you do this. I just can’t.”

The tilt of Beck Grainger’s handsome head told her he was going to try reasoning with her. “You know, it’s not gonna be that bad. Luxury homes. With big yards. They’ll fit into the landscape.” He even ended the sentence with a wink. Was he serious? Given what Lila had been through recently, he was definitely barking up the wrong tree with an elitist suggestion that rich people made better neighbors.

“I don’t care what you’re building—you’re doing it at the expense of my sister’s inn. People stay here because of the ambiance and atmosphere. They stay here to listen to crickets in the trees and see fireflies blinking in the woods. We played in these trees as kids. They’ve been growing here since…well, since before Summer Island was even Summer Island. I can’t let you tear them down.”

Excerpt:

Rescuing Andrew Cambridge

From the door, Diegert saw tracks leading to the parking lot. The poorly plowed gravel space had at least a hundred cars in it, and Diegert had no idea where Andrew might be. He started searching the lot, looking down the aisles between cars. Finding nothing, he wondered if Andrew would’ve taken off into the woods, but there were no tracks in that direction. As his frustration grew, Diegert heard a group of kids shouting and laughing not far away. He moved in their direction and could see a group of six teens standing in a circle. The hoodlums surrounded Andrew and were taunting and teasing him. The boy was standing his ground as his tormentors threw snowballs and insults at him. Diegert stepped in front of Andrew and told the punks, “Get the fuck out of here.” One look at the menacing face of David Diegert was enough to give them pause, but the gun in his hand made the group of troublemakers quickly disperse.

Diegert turned to Andrew, saying, “I know you don’t know me, and you’ve been through some terrible things, but for your safety and survival you have to come with me. Now.”

Diegert had moved to the fence at the base of the water tower hill. The wire-cutting jaws on the pliers were completely inadequate to cut through the fencing. Diegert used them, though, to untwist the chain link diamonds. As he struggled with the metal, men from the casino spotted them and came running. The guys were taking pot shots at Diegert, and he had to stop untangling the fencing and return fire. Each time they stopped firing he went back to work dismantling the barrier. Soon he could hear the men’s voices growing closer. The chain links were almost untangled enough for them to slip through.

Diegert looked back to see one of the men ten meters away sighting his assault rifle on them. Covering Andrew, he looked up to see the man’s head explode off his shoulders. The beam of a laser sight was briefly visible in the bloody spray before the lifeless body collapsed to the ground. The next man in the lot was similarly vanquished, and Diegert quickly pulled the fencing apart so that he and Andrew could crawl through.

They ran a short distance through the woods and began ascending the hill. Two more men were firing on them as they were exposed on the hillside. The sniper fire was not able to take them out but did keep them pinned down long enough for Diegert to pick Andrew up and shoulder haul him up to the top of the hill. Fatima directed them to the SUV while she placed an incendiary round into the chamber of her rifle. She aimed carefully at the gas tank of the car the men were hiding behind. The shot entered the tank, igniting its contents and taking out the last two men who knew where the boy had gone.

Diegert sat in the driver’s seat, and Andrew was buckled in the back. Fatima put her rifle in the back of the vehicle and jumped into the front passenger’s seat. She reluctantly handed Diegert the keys, saying, “You’re in deep shit. What the fuck were you doing? I had to pull a favor to get the rifle, and you owe me.”

“Thanks for coming. I’d like to introduce you to Andrew Cambridge, but I request that you control your profane tongue.”

Fatima’s anger hung on her face until she turned to Andrew. When she looked at the traumatized boy, she became warm and gentle. Her smile was loving and comforting. Diegert drove down the hill heading back to Headquarters. She spoke to Andrew softly. “It’s all over, you’re going to be OK. You’re going home to be with your family. Don’t be frightened, Hamni, we’ll be in a safe place very soon.”

She reached her hand back and caressed the boy’s forearm. He closed his eyes, and the tears squeezed out of his lids and down his cheeks. Fatima pulled a handkerchief out of her pocket, unbuckled her seat belt, and climbed in the back to hug Andrew in her arms. “Shhh…” she said as the boy took comfort in her embrace.

When Diegert neared the Headquarters, he looked back and saw that Andrew was asleep in Fatima’s arms. She looked content and more peaceful than he had ever seen her. With less than a mile to go, Fatima told Diegert, “I don’t want you telling anyone about my involvement with this operation. You understand?”

“Who’s Hamni?”

“What?”

“Hamni? You called him Hamni when you spoke to him. His name is Andrew.”

“I know his name, and I didn’t call him anything else.” Her pissed-off face was back, but it now had shades of surprise and perplexity.

“I’m just saying, you called the kid Hamni, so I was just asking who that is?”

“Shut up, just make sure you don’t tell anyone I was involved at all.”

“You sure? Because you were awesome.”

“Tell no one anything. Pull the car over here.”

Diegert parked the SUV on the side of the road.

“You’re going to get out of the car and carry Andrew into Headquarters. I’ll return before you. Using the car is no big deal as long as I return without you. Returning the rifle, I have covered, but I owe Lindstrom a big favor which you are going to repay.”

Diegert looked at her and shrugged.

“Now think up a lie about how you got away and how you got back here with the boy and stick to it. Don’t mention me.”

“Yeah… Yeah, I got it, you were never there.”

Diegert stepped out of the vehicle, opened the passenger door, and lifted Andrew into his arms. Fatima drove away, and Diegert was left to walk the three quarters of a mile to Headquarters.

The gate opened automatically as Diegert approached with the boy. Inside, he went straight to medical as people in the halls and offices looked to see what was going on. A child in the facility was a very rare occurrence.
