Hi lovelies! Today I have a review of Station Fosaan (Book #1 of the Torch World series) by Dee Garretson. This exciting book is best described as Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan meets Jules Verne’s The Lost World. There’s also a chance to win all sorts of book swag AND a paperback copy of the book (North America only) see bottom of this post but first a bit about the book:

Book Cover (3)

Title: Station Forsaan by Dee Garretson

Date Published: 14th February 2017

Genre: YA Sci-fi

Description:

Scientists and their families stationed on the remote planet of Fosaan were promised a tropical vacation-like experience. But Fosaan, devastated from an apocalyptic event nearly 300 years ago, is full of lethal predators and dangerous terrain. Earthers are forbidden to go beyond the safety zone of their settlement and must not engage the remaining reclusive Fosaanians, native to the planet. 16-year-old Quinn Neen is about to do both of those things.

During an unsanctioned exploration of the planet, Quinn discovers a Fosaanian girl named Mira stealing food from his family’s living unit. But before he can convince her to show him around, scientists are taken captive, leaving Quinn and the other young Earthers at the mercy of space raiders.

Quinn must go from renegade to leader and convince Mira to become an ally in a fight against an enemy whose very existence threatens their lives and the future of Earthers stuck on Fosaan and at home.

Review:

Earther Quinn Neen finds a young Fosaan girl by the name of Mira in his family’s living unit, trying to steal food. He’s been told not to mix with the Fosaan’s but Quinn is curious about the world he’s living on and tries to befriend the girl.

Before he gets a chance to explore the world, all the scientists that are based on the planet are kidnapped leaving only their children.

Quinn and his friends, with the help of Mira must fight to stop disaster and find Quinn’s parents. But the Fosaan’s have a lot of secrets…

It’s been a while since I’ve read a sci-fi novel with a sort of adventure/quest storyline so when I read the synopsis for Station Fosaan, I was intrigued.

There were some really good characters. Quinn just seems like a nice person, curious, a little naive but loyal to the core. Mira is a strong and brave, someone you’d want on your side, it’s clear she doesn’t like what is going on with the Fosaan people and wants to help change things for the better.

A little shout out goes to Mags, Quinn’s parrot, who knows a few phrases but provided a little light relief through the story.

The ending rounds it off nicely, so you don’t have to worry about cliffhangers, but also leaves a few questions which will probably get answered as the series goes along.

The world building was quite good, but I felt like I got a little bombarded with it in the first few chapters and didn’t take it all in.

Station Fosaan is a fast paced, imaginative and engaging read and a great start to the series.

Happy #PublicationDay A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores by Laura Biggs @rararesources @PaperDollWrites #Giveaway

Hello lovelies! Wishing a happy publication day to Laura Biggs for her new book A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores. I have an exclusive Q&A with the author herself plus an amazing giveaway (see bottom of post) but first a little about the book:

A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores Amazon Cover

Title: A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores (A Little Hotel in Cornwall Book 2) by Laura Biggs

Date Published: 23rd July 2019

Genre: Chicklit

Description:

It looks like a perfect Cornish autumn, with aspiring novelist Maisie Clark still finding inspiration as a maid at the historic Penmarrow Hotel. Between the staff of quirky co-workers, glamorous and unusual guests, and her growing friendship with the charming but mysterious Sidney Daniels, Maisie is living out adventures instead of just penning them in the pages of her would-be novel’s growing number of chapters.

And then there’s the slight problem of keeping the balance between friendship and ‘something more’ with Sidney, who’s helping introduce her to the village’s version of a Cornish Halloween, and has recently taken an interest in Maisie’s secret that may change things between them. But even Maisie’s imagination can’t conjure the unusual event this Halloween brings to the Penmarrow. An eccentric earl has chosen this site to host his lavish birthday celebration that includes a pretty (and perceptive) young psychic whose predictions seem to have everyone on edge — and, to Maisie’s delight, the elusive novelist Alistair Davies is rumored to be part of the guest list! But with the earl’s bickering relatives and illustrious friends on hand— and more than one ghost of the past waiting to be revealed — it’s anyone’s guess what the festivities will bring before the party is over.

Will the psychic foretell doom for the earl’s gathering—and is her ‘gift’ as genuine as it seems? Will Maisie finally meet her favorite author face to face? And, more importantly, what about the romantic sparks that fly between Maisie and Sidney?

Q&A with Laura Biggs

Can you tell me a little bit about your book?

It’s the second book in a series about an American waitress and aspiring novelist who ends up working across the Pond in a beautiful Cornish hotel. It has a little bit of a Halloween theme, with some spooky events taking place when an eccentric and wealthy guest at the hotel hires a famous psychic as part of their elaborate birthday celebration.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from?

I think it came partly from my long-time fondness for light-hearted, mildly scary stories. Growing up, I adored classic films like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Blackbeard’s Ghost. And the idea of a wealthy earl’s bickering relatives gathering at a historic hotel for a haunted birthday party seemed very Agatha Christie somehow, even if there was no real mystery involved.

If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be?

A feel-good romance with a dash of Halloween fun!

What is a typical writing day like for you?

Well, it usually consists of about six to eight hours of writing on a laptop. I sometimes have a music playlist to work to or maybe some television to run in the background. And, of course, other obligations surface throughout the day, so it’s not complete solitude and screen time, thankfully!

If you could recommend just one book to read what would it be and why?

As far as fiction books go, I wouldn’t know where to start. There are so many I love and feel are prime examples of certain genres, such as Jane Austen for romance and Agatha Christie for mystery. It would be too hard to choose just one, I’m afraid!

Who are your favouriteauthors?

I’d have to say Jane Austen is among my all-time favourites authors. Her novel Sense and Sensibility is one I will never get tired of reading.

Tell me something interesting about yourself (that’s not in your author bio!)

Hmmm, let’s see. This isn’t so much interesting as a bit unconventional, BUT…I didn’t own a cell phone until 2018. So, yeah, I’ve been behind the times for awhile now, LOL!

What are you currently working on?

Right now, more books for my series ‘A Little Hotel in Cornwall’ are in the works (including a Christmas one for the end of the year!).

About The Author:

Laura Briggs is the author of several feel-good romance reads, including the Top 100 Amazon UK seller ‘A Wedding in Cornwall’. She has a fondness for vintage style dresses (especiallyA Little Hotel in Cornwall Author Pic ones with polka dots), and reads everything from Jane Austen to modern day mysteries. When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, caring for her pets, gardening, and seeing the occasional movie or play.

It’s Beth’s high maintenance mother, Wendy, with terrible news. Her bridge partner, Alfie Pole, has died suddenly. While Beth, and most of Dulwich, is convinced that Alfie has pegged out from exhaustion, thanks to playing with Wendy for years, Beth’s mother is certain that there is foul play afoot.

Before she knows it, Beth is plunged into her most complicated mystery yet, involving the Dulwich Bridge Club, allotment holders, the Dulwich Open Garden set and, of course, her long-suffering boyfriend, Metropolitan Police Detective Inspector Harry York. The case stirs up old wounds which are much closer to home than Beth would like. Can she come up trumps in time to stop the culprit striking again – or does the murderer hold the winning hand this time?

Review:

A huge thank you to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this blog tour and sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

It’s nice to be back with Beth and the residents of Dulwich, it’s a bit like visiting an old friend as this is the sixth novel in the series.

This time Beth is asked to investigate the death of Alfie Pole, her high maintenance mum’s long suffering bridge partner. She’d convinced that it’s murder but Alfie was in his eighties, why would anyone want to kill of an old man?

I am already a huge fan of this series, they’re fun, quick reads with great characters that I just love catching up with.

Poor Beth, she thinks her life is going to plan, good job, dishy detective boyfriend and her son Ben is finally attending the much sought after Wyatt’s school. Then she has to deal with her mum! You can tell that Beth loves her but her selfishness and old before her time attitude is hard for her to deal with. I completely understood Beth’s frustrations, you’d have to have the patience of a saint to deal with her mother!

There’s also some nice character development in this novel, we also find out a little bit more about Beth’s past and why her relationship with her mother is quite so fraught. It also sets it up nicely for the next novel in the series.

I did feel a little confused by the killer reveal, it felt a little out of the blue but that’s just a small thing.

The body in Belair park is a humorous and fun cosy mystery that you can really lose yourself in for a few hours.

#BlogTour #Giveaway Q&A Thread of Hope by Rachel J Bonner @rararesources @racheljbonner1

Hello lovelies! Today I have an exclusive Q&A with author Rachel J Bonner and giveaway (see bottom of the post) but first a little about the book:

Thread Front Cover

Title: Thread of Hope (choices and consequences book 2) by Rachel J Bonner

Date Published: 2nd May 2019

Genre: Fantasy/Romance

Description:

What if your secrets are so dangerous they could destroy the one you love?

Is honesty always the best policy?

Leonie may have run away but Prospero will find her. He loves her and he wants a future with her by his side whatever the consequences. Only when he does find her, he ought to tell her who he really is, outside the monastery. That’ll make her run again. Dare he risk it? But if he doesn’t tell her, someone else may…

Marriage to Prospero is what Leonie wants most and the one thing she knows she can’t have. If he found out what she was really like, what she’d been, what she’d done, he’d despise her and she couldn’t bear that. Better to leave now than live a lie – but it’s harder than she expected. If only…

Gabriel is starting to discover the secrets inherent in Leonie, secrets that not even she knows, secrets that will tear the world apart. And the secrets he is keeping are tearing him apart. How can sacrificing those he loves possibly achieve peace when everything he discovers risks the death of millions?

Q&A with Rachel J Bonner:

Can you tell me a little bit about your book?

The series is a romance, a fantasy set far in our future after the world has been decimated by a range of cataclysmic events, and some people have developed mental powers. In Strand of Faith, the first book in the series, a monk and a girl fall in love, but they both have compelling reasons to stay apart – and they make different decisions. In Thread of Hope they start to face up to the consequences of those decisions – without knowing that their actions and history will generate further world shattering consequences.

If my husband saw a book described as romance and fantasy he wouldn’t read it, but he’s really enjoyed it. He describes it as interesting characters with damaged lives finding a place in a loving and caring community.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from?

I dreamt a scene which is now towards the end of Strand of Faith. It made such an impact on me that I had to work out what led up to it, and what would come next. And then the characters took over and it turned from what I thought was one book into a series.

If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be?

Ultimately it’s about people discovering their place in the world, lost and broken people finding love, healing, hope and redemption.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

There’s no such thing as a typical day! I work from home and juggle a range of jobs (see below!). I’ll normally aim to be at my desk working on something from about 9am to around 5pm, with a break for lunch. But that’s just an aim, and it’s very flexible; I might be out meeting a client, or something connected with voluntary work, or doing something domestic. And my husband and I try to take time out together each week, although we don’t always manage it.

If I am at my desk, I might be writing, or working on marketing and promotion. Or I could be working on one of my other contracts. Often the day will be a mixture of both, and I’ll try to make time for exercise as well. If I am writing, whether a first draft, rewrite or editing, I’ll get totally lost in it. Everything else will go by the board.

If you could recommend just one book to read what would it be and why?

The Bible (in a modern translation). Or is that cheating because it’s really 66 books? You can find almost every genre in there – romance, erotica, war, thriller, mystery, murder, suspense, psychological drama, family sagas…

Who are your favouriteauthors?

I have quite a list – some of my favourites include Neil Gaiman, Terry Prachett (Discworld), Jodi Picoult, Annette Marie (urban fantasy), Jodi Taylor (Chronicles of St Mary’s), Sarah Woodbury (After Cilmeri time travel fiction), Trisha Ashley (romance), Diane Gabaldon (Outlander), Anne McCaffery (Dragonrider series). But there are many, many more.

Is writing your only job? If not, what is your other job?

I have a whole range of ‘other jobs’ and it’s usually a juggling act between them all.

I’m a trustee at our local youth theatre, which is about reaching disabled, disadvantaged and minority group young people through theatre. I’m a financial adviser to a genealogical charity, and I’m very much involved at our local church, where I manage the sound system.

I’m also a freelance financial modeller and small business consultant and a qualified accountant. I run my own business, which means that some weeks I’m up to my eyebrows in work. I aim to work half time on average which is what gives me the flexibility both to write and to do voluntary work.

Tell me something interesting about yourself (that’s not in your author bio!)

I’ve got a master’s degree in civil engineering (that bit is in my bio), and during that course I studied for a year at Pennsylvania State University. We spent some time travelling in the local area, and I think the countryside and the Amish culture are definite influences on the Choices and Consequences series.

What are you currently working on?

Now Thread of Hope is out in the world, I’m working on the third book in the series, Weave of Love. That’s due for publication at the beginning of October, so it’s in the rewrite stage before going to my editor in a few weeks. Book 4, Cloth of Grace, which will be out next February, is in much the same place.

But I’ve also got a new book idea on the go fantasy romance again, but this time with angels – which is competing for my time, and a non-fiction book based on letters to my great grandfather…

Also as a special bonus the first in the series Strand of Faith will be on sale from the 2nd to 9th May.

Here’s a little about Strand of Faith:

A girl. A monk. An unthinkable sacrifice.

When the choice is between love and life, how can anyone decide?

In a post-apocalyptic future, a girl and a monk, both with extraordinary mental powers, have compelling reasons not to fall in love. But their choices will have consequences for the rest of the world.

After the troubles of his youth, Brother Prospero has found comfort and fulfilment in the monastery. Then he discovers something that forces him to reconsider his whole vocation. How can it possibly be right to leave a life of worship and service for human desire? And if he does leave, will the pressures from his past destroy him?

Orphaned and mistreated, Leonie has found sanctuary and safety at the Abbey. When she comes into contact with Prospero everything spirals out of her control. Everyone she’s ever loved has died. She can’t do that to him. But how can she walk away from the first place she’s truly belonged?

Abbot Gabriel is faced with an impossible choice. He can do nothing and watch the world descend into war. Or he can manipulate events and ensure peace – at the cost of two lives that he is responsible for. Is he strong enough to sacrifice those he loves?

About The Author:

Rachel J Bonner is the author of the four book Choices and Consequences series, the first of which, Strand of Faith, is due out in November 2018.

Getting a degree in engineering, followed by a career in accountancy is probably not a conventional path to becoming an author, particularly in paranormal romance. Rachel says that, although accountancy isn’t anything like as boring as everyone thinks, writing is a lot more fun.

When not writing, she can be found walking in the beautiful countryside near where she lives, which has influenced much of the scenery in her books, or shooting things with her local archery club. Target shooting only, honest. Nothing to worry about.

She also enjoys swimming, eating chocolate chip cookies and growing aromatic herbs, especially thyme and rosemary. It’s no coincidence that her heroine likes the same things.

Review:

I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this blog tour.

I pick up this book awhile ago, because I just loved the title but unfortunately it’s been sitting on my kindle for a while now but like most things I haven’t got around to it until now.

Caity has just escaped from her controlling ex, in desperate need of money, she takes a job with her sister at her event planning business.

She jumps at the chance to go to Dublin for a week but when she gets there she gets into mishap after mishap.

Can Caity get her self confidence back and put her past behind her?

This is quite a short and fun read, which is set in Ireland, a place I’ve always wanted to visit. While at times it is light hearted, it also covers the serious topics of toxic relationships and emotional abuse.

Caity is flawed and slightly vulnerable character, who seems to have disaster after disaster. I did keep wishing something would go right for her but on the other hand I couldn’t help but giggle at some of the things that went wrong.

I have to be honest at time I felt it was hard to like Caity because she felt quite judgy towards other women yet she kind of falls at the feet of Declan when he gives her the slightest bit of encouragement…it just slightly irked me.

Overall flying by the seat of my knickers is quirky and entertaining read, perfect if you’re looking to escape from reality for a few hours.
