Excerpt:

Rescuing Andrew Cambridge

From the door, Diegert saw tracks leading to the parking lot. The poorly plowed gravel space had at least a hundred cars in it, and Diegert had no idea where Andrew might be. He started searching the lot, looking down the aisles between cars. Finding nothing, he wondered if Andrew would’ve taken off into the woods, but there were no tracks in that direction. As his frustration grew, Diegert heard a group of kids shouting and laughing not far away. He moved in their direction and could see a group of six teens standing in a circle. The hoodlums surrounded Andrew and were taunting and teasing him. The boy was standing his ground as his tormentors threw snowballs and insults at him. Diegert stepped in front of Andrew and told the punks, “Get the fuck out of here.” One look at the menacing face of David Diegert was enough to give them pause, but the gun in his hand made the group of troublemakers quickly disperse.

Diegert turned to Andrew, saying, “I know you don’t know me, and you’ve been through some terrible things, but for your safety and survival you have to come with me. Now.”

Diegert had moved to the fence at the base of the water tower hill. The wire-cutting jaws on the pliers were completely inadequate to cut through the fencing. Diegert used them, though, to untwist the chain link diamonds. As he struggled with the metal, men from the casino spotted them and came running. The guys were taking pot shots at Diegert, and he had to stop untangling the fencing and return fire. Each time they stopped firing he went back to work dismantling the barrier. Soon he could hear the men’s voices growing closer. The chain links were almost untangled enough for them to slip through.

Diegert looked back to see one of the men ten meters away sighting his assault rifle on them. Covering Andrew, he looked up to see the man’s head explode off his shoulders. The beam of a laser sight was briefly visible in the bloody spray before the lifeless body collapsed to the ground. The next man in the lot was similarly vanquished, and Diegert quickly pulled the fencing apart so that he and Andrew could crawl through.

They ran a short distance through the woods and began ascending the hill. Two more men were firing on them as they were exposed on the hillside. The sniper fire was not able to take them out but did keep them pinned down long enough for Diegert to pick Andrew up and shoulder haul him up to the top of the hill. Fatima directed them to the SUV while she placed an incendiary round into the chamber of her rifle. She aimed carefully at the gas tank of the car the men were hiding behind. The shot entered the tank, igniting its contents and taking out the last two men who knew where the boy had gone.

Diegert sat in the driver’s seat, and Andrew was buckled in the back. Fatima put her rifle in the back of the vehicle and jumped into the front passenger’s seat. She reluctantly handed Diegert the keys, saying, “You’re in deep shit. What the fuck were you doing? I had to pull a favor to get the rifle, and you owe me.”

“Thanks for coming. I’d like to introduce you to Andrew Cambridge, but I request that you control your profane tongue.”

Fatima’s anger hung on her face until she turned to Andrew. When she looked at the traumatized boy, she became warm and gentle. Her smile was loving and comforting. Diegert drove down the hill heading back to Headquarters. She spoke to Andrew softly. “It’s all over, you’re going to be OK. You’re going home to be with your family. Don’t be frightened, Hamni, we’ll be in a safe place very soon.”

She reached her hand back and caressed the boy’s forearm. He closed his eyes, and the tears squeezed out of his lids and down his cheeks. Fatima pulled a handkerchief out of her pocket, unbuckled her seat belt, and climbed in the back to hug Andrew in her arms. “Shhh…” she said as the boy took comfort in her embrace.

When Diegert neared the Headquarters, he looked back and saw that Andrew was asleep in Fatima’s arms. She looked content and more peaceful than he had ever seen her. With less than a mile to go, Fatima told Diegert, “I don’t want you telling anyone about my involvement with this operation. You understand?”

“Who’s Hamni?”

“What?”

“Hamni? You called him Hamni when you spoke to him. His name is Andrew.”

“I know his name, and I didn’t call him anything else.” Her pissed-off face was back, but it now had shades of surprise and perplexity.

“I’m just saying, you called the kid Hamni, so I was just asking who that is?”

“Shut up, just make sure you don’t tell anyone I was involved at all.”

“You sure? Because you were awesome.”

“Tell no one anything. Pull the car over here.”

Diegert parked the SUV on the side of the road.

“You’re going to get out of the car and carry Andrew into Headquarters. I’ll return before you. Using the car is no big deal as long as I return without you. Returning the rifle, I have covered, but I owe Lindstrom a big favor which you are going to repay.”

Diegert looked at her and shrugged.

“Now think up a lie about how you got away and how you got back here with the boy and stick to it. Don’t mention me.”

“Yeah… Yeah, I got it, you were never there.”

Diegert stepped out of the vehicle, opened the passenger door, and lifted Andrew into his arms. Fatima drove away, and Diegert was left to walk the three quarters of a mile to Headquarters.

The gate opened automatically as Diegert approached with the boy. Inside, he went straight to medical as people in the halls and offices looked to see what was going on. A child in the facility was a very rare occurrence.

Excerpt:

Kriton charged him, swinging a big right hand at Edris’s jaw.

Edris easily slipped under the blow. With Kriton’s defenses dropping, he could’ve countered, but decided against it.

Kriton shot a flurry of jabs at Edris’s nose. Weaving to the left, then the right, Edris dodged them all.

Several people booed.

Come on!” one of them yelled. “This ain’t no dance! Fight!”

Kriton threw another powerful right at Edris’s head. Again, Edris dodged the blow. He then slipped a left jab into Kriton’s forehead. It wasn’t hard and Kriton knew it.

You laying back?” Kriton hollered, furious. “You think you can lay back with me? I can take anything you got.”

Faking a left to Edris’s chin, Kriton kneed him in the groin. Edris doubled over, clutching himself. The referee attempted to get in between the two fighters, but Kriton shoved him away. He pummeled Edris’s head, then sent uppercuts into his unprotected face.

How’s that, Eddie?” Kriton asked as he battered Edris mercilessly. “Where’s your father now? The drunken whore-chaser!”

Extract from Mama’s Gone (Book 4):

Mama's Gone - High Resolution

February 1997

Zing. Alice first heard a whizzing noise and then felt a sharp movement of air – way before she saw anything. And then it was all too late. She turned to her Mama sat to her left as the woman’s head hurtled backward. The red circular mess where an eye once was. The blast of brain and skull that splattered the wall. Bobby threw himself toward Mary Lou to protect her from the assault, but there was no point.

He scurried over and lay on his dead wife as Alice hit the deck. Nikolay drew his revolver almost before the bullet flew through Mama, Alice thought. Lara Mikhailov dragged him down to the floor. Nobody in the room was above window height and there had been no fourth shot.

Anyone else hurt?”

Three shots, one dead. A professional hit for sure. Worthy of the great Arnold Roach, may he rest in peace. Alice held her snub nose ready for action and Bobby cradled Mary Lou in his arms, rocking them side-to-side in the first moments of his grief.

Alice glanced at Bobby and looked at Nikolay. Had his gun been out before the zing? Couldn’t be certain of anything right now. Events unfolded around her and she felt completely estranged from them. Despite the body lying near her feet, Alice didn’t believe Mama was dead. She saw it was true, but it meant nothing to her. Like the world stopped still and she carried on breathing – only she continued on the sidelines as everything flowed ever onwards.

Nikolay’s bodyguard, Mikhailov edged to a window and cautiously inched her head to spot the sniper. Nada. Nikolay Markov spoke to her but Alice couldn’t discern a single word – still trapped in her time-slipped bubble. His mouth moved again but his expression became more aggressive. Angry.

What just happened?”

We know nothing of this. My mother’s been killed. You think I’d do that? To my Mama?”

Alice found a pistol lying in her hand, which she must have taken out of her handbag. An unconscious action. She glanced round and Bobby had let go of Mary Lou, holding a revolver. Someone would pay for killing her Mama.

Chosen by Wiki.ezvid.com among their list of 10 Gripping and Intelligent Legal Thrillers

The courtroom scenes are wonderfully written…the characters are well described and the author paints a picture of each in the mind of the reader…Strong plot, strong characters and a strong writing style that I really enjoyed. This one is a definite “thumbs-up.” Strongly recommend! I look forward to reading additional works by N. Lombardi, Jr.

Kim M Aalaie, Author’s Den

One of my favorite suspense novels of the year. It will make you question the legal system.

The Eclectic Review

The courtroom action is excellent, trimmed to the most gripping parts of the trial, with plenty of emotional impact…a fairly realistic portrayal of the way small-town US society works…a fast-moving story with plenty of dramatic moments, and a big twist in the final pages.

Crime Review

“When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down.

A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran’s counselor, is caught up in the chase.

Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa’s patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers gets there first, leading to Darfield’s dramatic capture.

Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine. Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge?”

Extract:

Chapter 4

The city council had no choice but to call an emergency meeting with the mayor. All but one of the council members, despite the late notice, were able to make it. The police chief was summoned, and the head of the Bruntfield Police Union also insisted on being present. They didn’t meet in the public hall, but rather in the private chambers in the back where they sat around an oval walnut table, nearly all of them dressed in white buttoned- down short-sleeve shirts, except for the chief who was dressed in uniform, and one councilman dressed in a suit and tie.

So now we’re national news,” the mayor announced despondently. He was a short man with a very round body, his features reminding one of a genial uncle in a TV sitcom. He had a buzz cut hairstyle and distended cheeks. Despite his almost comical looks, he was well liked by the people, and now deep in his second term. “Care to tell us how that happened, John?”

John Garson, Chief of Police, Bruntfield Township, squirmed uneasily in his chair. His embarrassment looked incongruous when compared to his reputation and his mien, a well-built man, his chiseled features bearing the epitome of moral integrity, his hair cut in an austere style that radiated a combination of duty and pride; a dedicated officer of the law. “Officers Puente and Fox responded to a call of vandalism and approached a man who fitted the description that was consistent with the 911 call. From what I know at this point, and that may change, is that the suspect resisted arrest.”

Was he armed?”

As far as I know he was not, mayor.”

Were there other officers involved?”

Yes, backup was requested and two units responded.”

Is it safe to say”—and now the mayor’s voice took on a mordant tone—”that allegations are going to be made that these men, six officers in total, used excessive force on an unarmed man, considering he’s dead as a result of this confrontation?”

More than likely, Your Honor.”

An unarmed homeless man, who just happens to be a goddamned war hero!” exclaimed the mayor, slapping his hand on the table. “Purple Heart, Bronze Star!”

The silence that followed was not surprising.

A man dies while being apprehended, and we aren’t even sure if he committed this petty act of vandalism. This looks bad. Like hooliganism. A goddamned war hero for Chrissakes! Thank God it wasn’t a black man!”

A chuckling snort was heard from the far side of the table. “You got something to say, Ray?”

Ray Miffler was the leading property developer in Bruntfield, and his inputs into town planning were significant. But he typically contributed next to nothing on any other issue. And he was a smartass too. His angular face opened into a wily smile. “It could have been worse…could have been a woman. Imagine, six burly cops?”

The mayor instantly regretted giving this man any attention and didn’t wait for the idiot to finish before he shouted, “He had a prosthetic foot for God’s sake! No more flippant comments, Ray, or we’ll throw you out of here!”

The mayor then redirected his attention back to Garson. “Do you know these men, John?”

Of course I’m familiar with them, it’s a small force.”

Chief Garson,” injected a middle-aged balding man with a bushy red mustache, wearing wire-rimmed spectacles; Brad Wilkinson, also the Superintendent of Bruntfield School District, “have any of these men been implicated in any similar situations, where, I mean, excessive force was suspected?”

Of course, we checked that first thing, and there had been some complaints against three of the officers. It was quite a while ago, before I came.”

And what is the status of these men, are they still on the job?”

As of this moment, yes, but I am considering full suspension pending the outcome of this meeting.”

The police union boss fidgeted in his chair. Bushy salt-and- pepper hair, puffed up in a style dating back to the fifties, jowls that hung like slabs of beef, his tremendous paunch half-hidden beneath the table, he made clear his position. “That wouldn’t be acceptable to us. Paid administrative leave is more what we have in mind. It’s not the first time this has been done pending an investigation…almost standard…remember, innocent until proven guilty.”

So how else are we going to respond to this!” the mayor demanded.

Abe Norson, small-headed but handsome, with a fashionably trimmed van-dyke, the owner of Bruntfield’s Ford dealership, spoke up. “I think at the very least we should hold an inquiry.”

Wilkinson couldn’t suppress himself. “Inquiry?” he blurted. “A man is dead, I would think a grand jury would be more appropriate.”

The mayor looked directly across from him. “Burns?”

Alexander Burns was the sixty-four-year-old city attorney.

The only councilman wearing a full suit despite the heat wave. His black, thick-framed glasses sat perched upon a hairless rectangular-shaped granite face, his wide mouth horizontal, his little eyes revealing nothing. “I’m afraid I concur with Councilman Wilkinson. We need to demonstrate that we’re on top of this and that we take the matter seriously…a grand jury would serve that purpose.”

The beefy police union rep immediately responded. “We would be vigorously opposed to that.”

I advise grand jury proceedings,” Burns countered. “But no indictment.”

Excuse me,” Wilkinson blurted. “How can you say ‘no indictment’? We have to hear the evidence first, or am I off- course here?”

It’s the DA’s ballgame. Isn’t that right, Louis?”

Louis Pimply, a deputy DA, a wiry man in his early thirties, responded. “Most of the time, yes.”

Any witnesses, John?” the city attorney asked.

Garson put his head down, signaling an unpleasant reply. “Four. And then there’s a videotape…from the bus depot.”

Is it in police possession?”

Garson nodded his head affirmatively.

Burns looked at the deputy DA. “Louis?”

The DA’s office does have the final say as to what evidence can be admitted.”

Miffler spoke up. “What about this homeless guy? Any history of violence? Prior arrests? Minor infractions?”

Garson answered. “He was cited for loitering, sometime last year.”

Is he of right mind?” Miffler continued, “I mean, you know, these vets sometimes come home a bit looney…was he involved in any treatment for that matter?”

Ah now, Ray has an excellent point there,” Burns said. ”Let’s look at the supposed victim’s background and see if we can find anything to show he wasn’t just a complacent citizen, but someone whose actions were, say, unbalanced, and therefore threatened the well-being of the responding officers.”

There were two letters,” Garson disclosed, “that we believe he intended to mail. Stamps were on them, but I guess he forgot to mail them. They were both addressed to the New Hope Trauma Recovery Clinic in Manhattan.”

That’s a start,” Burns said.

So, we are aiming at no indictment, precluding a trial?” Wilkinson asked in disbelief, causing a fit of murmuring among the council members.

Burns held both his hands out to grab everyone’s attention. “A trial can last months, even a year or more, do you really want that constant publicity?”

Norson, the car dealer, raised an important point. “Don’t you think that when it’s announced that there’ll be no trial, the public outcry, which no doubt there will be, will cause harm to our standing in the eyes of the people?”

Of course, there will be a hell of a hullabaloo,” Burns admitted. “But you’ll see, it won’t last long. The public will just get tired of the whole thing and the dust will settle, in less than a year I imagine. But a trial…we’ll be in the headlines continually.”

“Let’s put it to a vote,” the mayor suggested. “Inquiry, or grand jury with no indictment.”

After fifteen minutes of discussion, votes were cast. Grand jury, no indictment, was the final decision. It seemed a sensible decision. But then again, none of them could be expected to have predicted the future.

#Promo Book Spolight: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades by S.M. Stevens @SMStevens17

I owe the lovely S.M Stevens a huge apology this should have gone live on Friday which was Publication day but because I have a memory like a sieve, I forgot. Here is the belated book spotlight for her powerful new novel:

Title: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades by S.M. Stevens

Publisher: Touch Point Press

Date Published: 27th September 2019

Genre: Women’s fiction

Description:

Fragile but practical 22-year-old Shelby Stewart is damn sure “mild” childhood sexual abuse by her stepfather—a respected teacher and revered coach—didn’t change her. She succeeds at her new PR job in 1980s Boston but sucks at romance, sabotaging relationships with men her friends insist are not good enough for her.

Shelby’s co-worker, ambitious and confident Astrid Ericcson, says she wrote the book on How to Get Ahead by Flirting. But when her boss’s innuendoes escalate to not-so-subtle touching and under-the-table footsie, she finds both her career and her safety at risk.

Together, the women build their careers, friendships and romances while facing their respective demons.

I’d like to add that, despite the heavy themes, my early reviewers tell me the book is entertaining, funny and a “safe” place to deal with sexual trauma. Another great compliment came from a reviewer who said the book inspired her to tell her husband about a workplace incident she’d been keeping secret. I hope this book inspires more such conversations!

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades touches on #MeToo subjects, wherein women reach new highs and lows in life, work, and romance, while struggling to make sense of the abusive relationships that haunt them.

About The Author:

A lifelong business writer who dabbled in creative writing on the side, S.M. Stevens found herSMStevens opportunity to write fiction in earnest when she broke her pelvis in three places in a horseback riding fall. On crutches for three months and unable to commute to work, cook, clean or shuttle kids to activities, she turned to writing. The result was Shannon’s Odyssey, a middle-grade novel written for her younger daughter.

The following year, Stevens was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which was treated with surgery and five months of chemotherapy. During this recovery, she wrote Bit Players, Has-Been Actors and Other Posers for her older daughter and all musical theatre-loving teens. Two additional Bit Players novels followed, filling the void in fiction for fans of performance shows like the Glee TV series and the High School Musical movies.

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades is her first adult novel, which was prompted by the #metoo movement. Fascinated by the parallels between workplace sexual harassment and childhood incest, specifically how society asks many of the same questions of both types of victim, she wrote the dual narrative of Shelby and Astrid, two women starting their careers in 1980s Boston while struggling with past and present demons.

Her business career includes executive positions at Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations including the Franklin Park Zoo and the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) Museum in Boston. Currently, she consults and provides marketing and public relations services to solar energy companies.

Her freelance writing career includes articles and columns published in the Boston Globe, Bay State Parent, Bay State Realtor, Strategic Communications Magazine and Guitar & Bass Magazine, plus too many ghost-written articles to list.

Stevens has a bachelor’s degree in English from Cornell University. She also studied at University College at the University of London. She lives in Clinton, Mass., and Washington, N.H. She has two daughters, a dog and a cat.

Description:

A fast-paced action thriller inspired by real events in the aftermath of the Iraq War.

With Saddam Hussein deposed and an entire country in need of rebuilding, former Royal Marine John Pierce hears the siren call of adventure and opportunity. His fledgling UK business is struggling to support his young family and he has connections in the Iraqi capital – fate seems to point one way.

In early 2004, Pierce rolls the dice when he jumps into a taxi in Jordan and heads for the turmoil of postwar Baghdad to grab a share of the reconstruction gold rush. But when Iraq spirals into the hell of a full-blown insurgency, he must rely on his wits and his local friends if he’s to evade the rampant bloodshed.

As the action rolls across the blood-stained Iraqi landscape and embraces London’s seedy underbelly, Pierce tangles with the authorities at home and finds himself thrust into the heart of British and American covert operations against Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Having set out with little more than ambitious goals and an appetite for risk, can a determined ex-bootneck survive the mounting chaos unscathed and succeed in hitting the jackpot?

APPETITE FOR RISK BLOG TOUR

Fact or Fiction?

Appetite for Risk is a novel set in the aftermath of the Iraq War. It features a fictional main character, former Royal Marine (ex-bootneck) John Pierce, attempting to grab a share of the perceived reconstruction gold rush in Baghdad. That said, it’s fiction that is inspired by my own experiences as an ex-bootneck trying to achieve exactly the same fifteen years ago.

Many authors and their novels are inspired by a sprinkling of real life experience without making a big deal of it, so what makes Appetite for Risk different? To my mind, it’s the nature of the experiences I’ve used and how much they drive the story.

This novel was my first effort at creative writing since school. I’ll caveat that – it was my first attempt at writing purely for entertainment since my schooldays. In my role as an investigator and then a security & risk management consultant, I’ve often needed to get creative over the years with reports, assessments, scenarios, contingency planning, and producing cunning operational plans for a variety of tasks all over the world.

Step back to late 2017 and you’d have found me frustrated with delayed projects and late payments from overseas projects. On a whim, I decided to have a go at writing the book I’d always been encouraged to produce. I’ve never kept a diary or journal and there were too many legal skeletons lurking, so a memoir or non-fiction was out of the question. Instead, I wanted to write a novel that utilised a couple of memorable events from my times in Iraq. A particular road trip to Basra in late 2004, and my taxi rides from Amman to Baghdad in early 2004 that seemed madness on reflection (and not much better at the time).

My intention was to weave a fictional plot around these two elements and produce a full length novel of 90,000 – 100,000 words. Well, that’s not strictly true. My initial intention was to see if I could write a single reasonable chapter. I had tried writing a couple of pages ten years earlier out of boredom when stuck in Northern Iraq without electricity one day. The less said about those pages the better. On my return to the UK I’d even bought a ‘How to Write a Novel’ book, which had sat largely unread for the next decade.

The problem I quickly encountered was explaining how John Pierce came to be in Iraq, including why he made the decision to embark on such a perilous business plan. Slowly I found myself adding more and more layers of my own experiences and rationale (?) because any other explanation seemed unbelievable.

Because every decision made and every action taken has a myriad of justifications, consequences, and interwoven links with so many other factors, it became natural to set the actual flow of events down on paper as they had happened, including aspects of family, business, and related shenanigans in the UK. Using my professional background, I could then introduce ‘what-ifs’ that developed into fictional plot lines and allowed me the flexibility to add new scenes & characters, and ‘sex-up’ some memories to suit.

So, is Appetite for Risk fact or fiction?

It’s fiction, as I said. But to those who know me now and knew me back in 2004, it also contains a snapshot of my life as captured through the eyes of ex-bootneck John Pierce.

And how much of the book is ‘creative non-fiction’?

I’d estimate 60% is based on memory. And in some instances, even those featured in the book can’t remember where reality stops and the fiction starts.

Yours aye, Jack.

About The Author:

Jack Leavers is a former Royal Marine with over thirty-years’ experience spread across the military, private security, corporate investigations, maritime counter-piracy, and risk JL Tmanagement. His varied career has included numerous deployments to conflict zones around the world such as Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, trouble spots in Africa, and the Somali pirate-infested waters of the Indian Ocean.

Jack continues to work in challenging environments and has now begun to pen novels inspired by some of the more enterprising projects that got the green light, and other audacious plans that didn’t.

The current WIP is a follow up to Appetite for Risk that sees ex-bootneck John Pierce return to face a ruthless enemy in Africa.

Jack is normally based in London, UK, but finds he’s at his most productive writing-wise when deployed overseas. Trips to Iraq and Africa beckon, so the follow up should be finished soon.
