Happy #PublicationDay A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores by Laura Biggs @rararesources @PaperDollWrites #Giveaway

Hello lovelies! Wishing a happy publication day to Laura Biggs for her new book A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores. I have an exclusive Q&A with the author herself plus an amazing giveaway (see bottom of post) but first a little about the book:

A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores Amazon Cover

Title: A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores (A Little Hotel in Cornwall Book 2) by Laura Biggs

Date Published: 23rd July 2019

Genre: Chicklit

Description:

It looks like a perfect Cornish autumn, with aspiring novelist Maisie Clark still finding inspiration as a maid at the historic Penmarrow Hotel. Between the staff of quirky co-workers, glamorous and unusual guests, and her growing friendship with the charming but mysterious Sidney Daniels, Maisie is living out adventures instead of just penning them in the pages of her would-be novel’s growing number of chapters.

And then there’s the slight problem of keeping the balance between friendship and ‘something more’ with Sidney, who’s helping introduce her to the village’s version of a Cornish Halloween, and has recently taken an interest in Maisie’s secret that may change things between them. But even Maisie’s imagination can’t conjure the unusual event this Halloween brings to the Penmarrow. An eccentric earl has chosen this site to host his lavish birthday celebration that includes a pretty (and perceptive) young psychic whose predictions seem to have everyone on edge — and, to Maisie’s delight, the elusive novelist Alistair Davies is rumored to be part of the guest list! But with the earl’s bickering relatives and illustrious friends on hand— and more than one ghost of the past waiting to be revealed — it’s anyone’s guess what the festivities will bring before the party is over.

Will the psychic foretell doom for the earl’s gathering—and is her ‘gift’ as genuine as it seems? Will Maisie finally meet her favorite author face to face? And, more importantly, what about the romantic sparks that fly between Maisie and Sidney?

Q&A with Laura Biggs

Can you tell me a little bit about your book?

It’s the second book in a series about an American waitress and aspiring novelist who ends up working across the Pond in a beautiful Cornish hotel. It has a little bit of a Halloween theme, with some spooky events taking place when an eccentric and wealthy guest at the hotel hires a famous psychic as part of their elaborate birthday celebration.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from?

I think it came partly from my long-time fondness for light-hearted, mildly scary stories. Growing up, I adored classic films like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Blackbeard’s Ghost. And the idea of a wealthy earl’s bickering relatives gathering at a historic hotel for a haunted birthday party seemed very Agatha Christie somehow, even if there was no real mystery involved.

If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be?

A feel-good romance with a dash of Halloween fun!

What is a typical writing day like for you?

Well, it usually consists of about six to eight hours of writing on a laptop. I sometimes have a music playlist to work to or maybe some television to run in the background. And, of course, other obligations surface throughout the day, so it’s not complete solitude and screen time, thankfully!

If you could recommend just one book to read what would it be and why?

As far as fiction books go, I wouldn’t know where to start. There are so many I love and feel are prime examples of certain genres, such as Jane Austen for romance and Agatha Christie for mystery. It would be too hard to choose just one, I’m afraid!

Who are your favouriteauthors?

I’d have to say Jane Austen is among my all-time favourites authors. Her novel Sense and Sensibility is one I will never get tired of reading.

Tell me something interesting about yourself (that’s not in your author bio!)

Hmmm, let’s see. This isn’t so much interesting as a bit unconventional, BUT…I didn’t own a cell phone until 2018. So, yeah, I’ve been behind the times for awhile now, LOL!

What are you currently working on?

Right now, more books for my series ‘A Little Hotel in Cornwall’ are in the works (including a Christmas one for the end of the year!).

Review:

An igneous killer is targetting the residents of York and it’s up to Smith and his team to get to the bottom of it.

It’s nice to go back to a series that I’ve read every single one of, it feels a little like I’m visiting old friends.

If you’re not familiar with Stewart Giles’ work, they’re fast paced police procedurals, with a sprinkling of dark humour, plenty of action. Smith is a stubborn Australian, who even though he’s matured a little is still his usual rule bending, stubborn self.

I think Stewart Giles is determined to give me nightmares! His last book was featured skydiving (I hate heights) and this one has snakes in it! That being said I just could not put this book down.

The killer in the book was next level evil and sadistic, choosing random people to die in some of the most painful ways imaginable, all through the use of a cunning device hidden inside a letter.

I felt it was a little more gruesome than previous books but I enjoyed it myself, I’m a ghoul I know!

Venom is a gripping and, at times, gruesome read which I just couldn’t put down.

About The Author:

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.SG Author photo (4)

In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results. I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.

Miranda is something totally different. A stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.

Dropzone, book 2 in the Smith/Harriet series is now available and Venom, book 9 in the Smith series will be released in July 2019. I have plenty more books planned to include, by popular request, a sequel to Miranda.

Kill For Me Blog Tour

Review:

So this is the fifth in the DI Hannah Robbins series and the first I’ve read. I can safely say that you can read this as a stand-alone, without missing too much. You could even go back and read the other books in the series too, something I intend to do.

You are dropped into a very emotional beginning, Lucy Anderson is late to pick up her daughter but when she turns up a man has collected her but Lucy is a single mum and the only other person she’d trust to pick up her daughter would be her mum.

Her worst nightmares come true when she receives a text saying that someone has her daughter. The only way to get her back is to kill someone.

Could Lucy do it, kill to get her daughter back?

Kill For Me was a quite a fast paced read that I absolutely whizzed through.

The story revolves around the moral question, would you kill to save someone you care about getting hurt? It’s complex question that’s explored throughout the story.

I found all the characters really compelling, especially Lucy. She just seems like a sweet character, literally she wouldn’t even kill a bug, (she catches spiders and set them free rather than squashing them), her pain and terror really resonates off the page.

I did feel like some of the characters agreed to kill someone a little too quickly and some of their motives for this were a little flimsy but of course that’s just my opinion.

Kill For Me is a gripping police procedural that packs an emotional punch.

Review:

A huge thank you to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this blog tour and sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

It’s nice to be back with Beth and the residents of Dulwich, it’s a bit like visiting an old friend as this is the sixth novel in the series.

This time Beth is asked to investigate the death of Alfie Pole, her high maintenance mum’s long suffering bridge partner. She’d convinced that it’s murder but Alfie was in his eighties, why would anyone want to kill of an old man?

I am already a huge fan of this series, they’re fun, quick reads with great characters that I just love catching up with.

Poor Beth, she thinks her life is going to plan, good job, dishy detective boyfriend and her son Ben is finally attending the much sought after Wyatt’s school. Then she has to deal with her mum! You can tell that Beth loves her but her selfishness and old before her time attitude is hard for her to deal with. I completely understood Beth’s frustrations, you’d have to have the patience of a saint to deal with her mother!

There’s also some nice character development in this novel, we also find out a little bit more about Beth’s past and why her relationship with her mother is quite so fraught. It also sets it up nicely for the next novel in the series.

I did feel a little confused by the killer reveal, it felt a little out of the blue but that’s just a small thing.

The body in Belair park is a humorous and fun cosy mystery that you can really lose yourself in for a few hours.

Review:

As with my last review I said I wanted to read more fantasy, so I ended up reading two in the space of a week lol!

I want to thank the Write Reads Tours for inviting me on this blog tour and providing me with a copy of The Written in exchange for an honest review.

Farden is a member of The Written, an elite group of magicians. When a book of dark magic is stolen from a group of scholars, it brings Emaneska to the brink of war. Farden is tasked with finding who is behind it. But who can he trust?

Goodness me, The Written is a rip roaring adventure, full of magic, mayhem and talking dragons!

I feel like it’s a real balancing act with the start of a fantasy series, getting the right amount of world building coupled with introduction of characters and leaving enough unanswered questions or storyline threads for the next novel. Ben Galley manages this so well with The Written. It’s jam packed with vivid imagery, great world building and action that I really enjoyed.

My favourite aspect was of course the talking dragons. I love dragons in general, but the way they were written was a new an interesting way, at least to me. Each dragon has their rider, a siren, and they have an unbreakable bond which I thought was kind of sweet.

Now, the main character Farden is not all that likeable. He has a cocky attitude and lone wolf mentality but I think the author explain why he is the way he is well and I still ended up wanting to succeed and actually liking him a bit.

A little warning for those of you who don’t enjoy swearing, drug usage, blood or violence this may not be the novel for you. I personally had no problem with it as it wasn’t too overdone.

I have to be honest there was a bit of predictability with the story, I sussed the bad guy out quite early on, which meant for me certain parts of the story dragged a little, especially near the end but of course that’s just my opinion.

This is such a good start to a series and I’d recommend this to anyone who loves action packed adventures, even if you’re not a fan of fantasy novels.
