Review:

This is the first book to feature DI Paolo Sterling and DS Dave Johnson. I think I’ve found my new favourite crime series! Retriever of Souls is gritty, gruesome and sometimes a little disturbing but I just didn’t want to put it down.

Women are showing up, brutally beaten until they are unrecognisable, dumped like rubbish.

Paolo Sterling is a such a compelling and realistic character, even when he was being a grumpy sod, I couldn’t help but like him. He got quite a complicated life outside the police, he’s still in love with his ex wife and can’t move on, even though he’s had a few offers. Paolo’s daughter Katy features quite heavily in the book, who I enjoyed as a character, despite being quite stubborn and refusing to listen to what anyone says.

His partner Dave Johnson on the other hand, annoyed me a little bit with his macho bravado and the occasional sexist comment. His does go on a bit of journey through the book and started to grow on me by the end.

I did sort of guess who the killer was around the half way mark but there were plenty of red herrings and misdirection that had me doubting myself. I also was fascinated by the little insights we got into the deranged killer’s mind and how he justifies killing in his sick mind.

I’d recommend Retriever of Souls to anyone who likes a gritty and grisly police procedural with lifelike and compelling characters. I can’t to get stuck into the next book Children in Chains.
